How does it compare to Giant Eagle? I get about $3 back per $50 with their gas rewards card.

I'd say our grocery bil is about 60% of what it would be if we bought everything at Meijer. We save probably $10-15 per week just on the vegetables we buy. I would recommend Aldi to anyone who isn't particular about brands. I'm amazed everytime we check out at just how low the bill is.

I am never impressed with the quality of the produce at their stores.

Really? I've never been dissatisfied. We've definitely run into some raggedy looking veggies, but we've always been able to find plenty of fresher ones to choose from. Interesting.

I don't like any of the supersize stores because even if you only want one item you'll be lucky to get in and out within 20-30 minutes.

Not even close. Target has some nice budget items and gifts. Walmart is largely junk.

As for chain stores, it's rare that I wait more than 5 min at giant eagle, usually walk right up.

FWIW.. I have an inside skinny from first hand experience with Walmart...

Not sure how the misperception ever got out there... but Walmart has some of the best purchasing agents on the planet... from the wholesale/seller perspective... they demand your above average product lines... and expect your best pricing... they also demand you hit 98-99% fill rates... the only problem a seller ever has with Walmart if your fill rates fall off even a fraction of a percentage...

In return, there is NO operation that pays their invoices faster than Walmart... impeccable... they pay their bills...

The Goodyear tires at Walmart are the exact same product as upper lines at Goodyear locations.. but with different labels... and they sell for half what that same exact tire gets anywhere else...

I learned a lot dealing with those folks... you try to sell your crap.. they will leave faster than any company I ever saw.. they generally pitch for your absolute best... but it's hell to get the price you want... they are a HUGE buyer and they know it...

There's no such thing as krogerS or meijerS :pissed:

Also, big ticket items like tires, which can be found for budget rates (and have to because of competition), don't really compare to the general products that draw in customers to that store.

My point wasn't just tires... it was the general position that their purchasing agents take for all products they sell in their stores... they won't buy below par merchandise... from a value proposition, I find them tough to beat
