Wake Forest close to living the dream...

Remember all the good wishes and warm thoughts that Wake Forest fans sent our way when Oden and Conley chose Matta? Can't find that thread anywhere but here is an update that is guaranteed to have their fans vomiting in the corner of the room! :slappy:

Wake was close to living the dream

If Thad Matta didn't get the Ohio State job in July of 2004, Wake Forest wouldn't be struggling right now.

That's because Mike Conley Jr. was extremely close to committing to Skip Prosser and the Demon Deacons that summer ? before Jim O'Brien was fired and Matta and his staff took over. Extremely close.

Conley and Greg Oden were dead-set on playing together in college, so just imagine how different things would be right now if the duo had landed at Wake instead of Ohio State.

My best guess is that Prosser's club would be fighting with North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Virginia for first place in the ACC instead of battling Miami and N.C. State in the league's cellar. Ohio State would be just "another" team rather than a club with a Final Four squarely set in its sights.

Matta had recruited Conley while he was at Xavier, but there was no way the poised floor leader and the best big man in the country were going to play in the A-10.
Then everything changed once Matta got the job in Columbus.

I remember when my friend got his academic scholarship from Wake Forest and they had Chris Paul and all of the good stuff was going on with their program and he was becoming a basketball fan and I already was and I commented on how cool that was going to be, being at a basketball power over there with Duke and UNC. I had no idea at the time that they were the leaders for Oden/Conley. That's crazy.

If they had Conley and Oden and were still fighting VA Tech and UVA then their program must be in pretty bad shape.

Given the ego we saw from these fans, imagine how it must have felt to open up SportsIllustrated.com and see this screen today. You just lost to NC State and, hey, what's that down there in the news items on the lower left...
