Voice chat on BP / Ventrilo Server

I think it would probably result in more intelligent conversation. It is easy to be a smartass/dick with just posting because it is so impersonal.
Not in this lifetime. people are rougher over any media than in person.
This chat won't work unless it was controlled. There is nothing like 10 people or so in a chat room all trying to talk at once. Maybe if a person controlled the chat room and had to designate speakers.

Actually, I was thinking it might be nice not to have a permanent, written record of the sky-is-falling stuff. :wink2:
heh, well that's true too.

Maybe we'll build a tibor bot and people can go in and scream at him to alleviate their issues.

I'm inclined to agree there.

As far as control and moderation, a lot of that is on the individual client end. Not the site end. Meaning if you're sick of hearing one or more people, mute them individually, and/or move to another room.

There's also something called bindings, that I only partially understand. As I grasp it, you assign a key (such as left shift) on your keyboard which serves as a broadcast button. With a binding, you could assign a second key which broadcasts only to a specific person.

Meaning, you could be in the general room chatting, but also have a second key to speak privately to someone else who may be in that room, or another one entirely.

Another thing I forgot, these servers include text chat as well. So even those who didn't want to (or couldn't for a variety of reasons) voice chat, they could still just listen and chat over text, or just text alone.

Yahoo has a set up just about like this. I imagine that others do too.

O.T. - I like the new forum layout. I don't miss the new users list, i can still go find that if needed.

Are there any other options for the 4 panel section? Hottest forums doesn't seem very useful, imho.

Kind of odd that the talk of something to make conversation more open on the site so quickly turned to talk of passwords and exclusion and moderation... would any of those things really be any big deal? I doubt it. (There's a quick Q&A for BN27.)

More info as I was just checking it out again -- the software has a small memory footprint, and runs in the background after you enable it. Doesn't have to be the top window for the keybinding on broadcast to work.

Moreover, when used with headphones, it doesn't interfere with speakers. I loaded an MP3 and played that through speakers while chat streamed in through the headphones. I imagine you could set this up any way you wanted (chat coming through speakers, etc.), but it's cool there are options.

The software itself was very easy to set-up.

Yeah, New Users, Highest Rep, Highest Infractions (lol), Top Thread Starters, Top Referrers, Most Thanked (not sure what that is), I think that's it.

I have been in chat roms in yahoo. If everyone tries to talk at once no one gets heard. That is why they would have to be controlled or they would be useless.

 Not the greatest list...

I'd vote for new users over most popular forums, but neither is that great.

btw, on thanks:
One of the biggest problems on forums as you may know is 'posts boosting'. There are users who LOVE to say 'thanks' when ever they can. How can it hurt? Their post count goes up, they have nothing to loose.

There are also users who really like to express their thanks to post but don't like posting a post that looks like they're post boosting.

Then comes the moderators who have to delete people's thanks yous so a thread can look readable with out the thanks yous thrown around.

Finally comes the posters of these useful posts. They have no idea how many people really likes their posts if only some people say 'thanks'.

What this hack does is fix ALL these problems - except those users who like post boosting. This places a button called 'thanks.' When a user clicks on it, it places his username in a box right under the post saying that so-and-so says 'thanks' for the post. Every-one who clicks is placed in one box.

By giving your users the extra feature, you forum will look allot nice and organized. It is a granted liking by ALL the members of your forum.
