Voice chat on BP / Ventrilo Server

I think that would be pretty cool... I'm game for it (as long as everyone promises to not make fun of my hillbilly accent.)
Hey I think it's a great idea. that way we can hear each other and even make fun of people with hillbilly accents.

That would be a hoot on game day... I'd love to be able to leave it on speaker and hear O-H! I-O! from across the country all morning, and it would be fun to cheer live with friends and fellow Buckeyes during the game.

That's exactly what I was thinking. About the only time the voice thing would be worth it would be on game day.

I'm of the opinion it would get little use, except in pockets on gameday, and perhaps on special events (something organized, if we had a person of interest in for a chat, etc.).

On the other hand, zero overhead for the site, and the cost is next to nothing. It's also the type of thing that could be addictive and find greater use.

I'll add a poll to this thread.

If it is a conference type chat you are going to have a lot of people stepping on each oters chat. Good idea though.

Hard to say. I listened in on a server today to get an idea of what it would be like, and there were 30-40 people in there chatting away like they might in a live group setting. It was all quite natural. When smaller groups wanted to splinter off and have their own convo, they moved to another room.

Could be an interesting addition to BP, and it's not something other football/basketball fan forums have done, as I'm aware. We've ventured into video, maybe it's time for audio as well.
I'd be curious to hear their feedback after a few months... or perhaps a link where we could listen in.

Pregame perhaps. In-game (& after a loss) could be a different story.

I think it would probably result in better more intelligent conversation

Well that's just it, I couldn't find any sports-related site using it. My Googling shows that this is something normally used by groups of people playing games like World of Warcraft, Counterstrike, etc.

So we're a completely different audience, and it could fall completely flat if we tried it. Not that a failed feature would be a big deal, my interest is still to see the BP is out in front trying new things for the community, even if they're old in other applications.

I'm still undecided on this.

Yeah, I've used it in that context (CS). It was pretty simple, but the numbers were fairly low... and I have no idea how it would compare.

I could see this being useful for planning things, ie BPRT blogs.

Perhaps it would be interesting to have scheduled chats. It seems like it would be tough to maintain moderation at all times. Even if someone in chat went and got a mod (online but not in chat) after someone acted up, they would not have first hand knowledge/hearing of what happened. I suppose you could archive everything, but that could be tedious and space-eating.

A decent amount of board-based moderation does not happen immediately afterwards... and that's on the basic platform of the forum.

Yeah, wouldn't be any logging. If we had a special guest in to do a moderated chat, what we'd probably do is silence everyone but a few people to keep it orderly.

Like the forums, people can block/ignore/mute others they don't want to hear, which is another layer of protection.

To answer a question asked earlier, yeah, any of the rooms can have passwords.
