VJ King (PG Louisville Cardinals)

King is very very good! He makes good players the same age as him look like elementary school players. I think if your AAU team plays against him you will realize how good he really is. I really cannot believe it the first time I saw him.

I believe you Litl!

We probably won't play them unless he is playing up two grades. We're a 17U team. However, we may play Tate's All-Ohio Red team down in Myrtle Beach during the certified season in July.

He might not be physically mature enough to play with 17-year-olds but from a pure basketball standpoint he is probably better than 99% of 17-year-olds playing in AAU.

The pool of players will be trimmed to a 12-man team that will compete as the USA U16 National Team in Maldonado, Uruguay for the FIBA Americas U16 Championship from June 11-15.

St. Vincent-St. Mary freshman V.J. King, with ball, is among 30 players USA Basketball's U-16 coaching staff is considering for this summer's national team during tryouts in Colorado. The staff includes St. Edward coach Eric Flannery. Flannery, a USA assistant coach, will be blogging about the team and its experiences for The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - I have been extremely fortunate in my basketball coaching career. It has taken me to many places, I have met a lot of people, have seen an unbelievable amount of basketball talent, and have learned from some of the best minds in the game. This current experience with USA Basketball may end up ranking as one of the best.

USA Basketball has invited the best 30 freshmen and sophomores in the country to try out for a final roster of 12. One of the players is St. Vincent-St. Mary freshman V.J. King, the only player from Ohio. On Sunday we reduced the roster to 16, including King, and will make our final cuts Monday night. The final team will be announced Tuesday morning.

LeBron's alma mater has another star on the rise in V.J. King
Rising St. Vincent-St. Mary sophomore wing solidifies his status as elite young prospect by earning a spot on USA Basketball's U16 National Team headed to Uruguay.

He's from Akron, Ohio, he's a sophomore at St. Vincent-St. Mary and he's already one of the best high school basketball players in the country.

No, this isn't 2000, and no, we're not talking about LeBron James.

We're talking about V.J. King ? a scintillating 6-6 small forward who is already being compared to the four-time NBA MVP.

"Once I came to (St. V's), I knew they were going to start making comparisons like that," King, 16, said in a hold-your-horses tone. "But Coach Dru (Joyce), especially, told me not to get into that comparison stuff. He just told me to keep working and start my own chapter, so that's what I'm doing."

King did that and more as a freshman. He led the Irish in scoring ? right around 16 points per game ? and helped them to a 20-10 record and a state runner-up finish.

One decision that King has a lot of time to ponder is where he'll go to college. He's already been promised scholarships from several elite Big Ten schools, including Ohio State and Wisconsin.

King said there's no early favorite in the recruiting process.

"It's good to see that the coaches recognized my work and my talent and they like how I'm playing," King said. "But all the coaches basically told me I have a lot of time. Just keep your head down, do your thing, stay humble and keep working. So I just take the feedback from the coaches and keep on doing what I'm doing.

"I'm trying to stay focused on the moment because I'm not guaranteed tomorrow. I'm just focused on what I need to do for my team now."

SVSM's V.J. King helps lead U16 U.S. basketball team to gold medal game: Eric Flannery coach blog

St. Vincent-St. Mary incoming sophomore V.J. King, with ball, tallied eight points and eight rebounds Friday to lead the U.S. U16 boys basketball team to a spot in Saturday's title game at the FIBA Americas Championship in Uruguay. (Steven Maikoski, USA Basketball)

MALDONADO, Uruguay - We are coming home with a medal, V.J. King and I. The question is will it be silver or gold?

I am sitting in the arena shortly after our 93-64 semifinal win over Puerto Rico, watching Canada play Argentina. We play the winner Saturday in the title game. (All of the games will be shown live over the Internet here).

King, from St. Vincent-St. Mary, has really stepped up the last two games. He had eight points and eight rebounds Friday in 15 minutes of play.

Friday he provided a spark off the bench by getting some big offensive rebounds and a few deflections on defense that led to some steals. We started the game very sluggish and were trailing until King entered the game.

He is now sitting down next to me and I asked him if he has a message for back home. Here it is: "I came here to get a job done, and I am still not finished. I want a gold medal." My sentiments exactly.

V.J. King: Offers Piling Up
July 23rd, 2013
By JACK LeGWIN
Special to ZAGSBLOG

ORLANDO, Fla. ? V.J. King is never the flashy player that catches your eye right away.

He finds other ways to do so over the course of time.

The fourth-ranked player in the Class of 2016 by ESPN, King led the King James Shooting Stars to a 35-point win over Hokies Elite in the first game of pool play at the 16U National Championships at the Wide World of Sports.

One of the smoothest players in the country, King is listed at 6-foot-7, and was seen running the offense at the point guard spot often in the second half in the win.

?I never was the most athletic player on my team, even when I was 12 and 13 years old.? King told SNY.tv. ?I had to find different ways to score and standout. I just play my game, and try to be calm and patient.?

He recently has added offers from Georgetown and UConn, which join offers from Ohio State, Iowa State, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Charlotte.

?Its a great honor to see that a coach like John Thompson III recognizes my game, and he likes what he sees,? King said. ?It lets me know that the work I am doing is paying off. I?m still not a full player yet though. I?m not a finished product, I?m still working on my game, but it?s very nice to see that they have offered me.?

UConn coach Kevin Ollie and his staff also tracked King at Peach Jam.

As for the future decision, King has three more years before he will be stepping onto a college court, but he does have an idea about what he is looking for in the future.

?Not every school is fit for certain players, and I have to see which school fits my game the most,? he said.

King will get the opportunity to chose when the time comes, but schools are getting after him quickly.

AKRON, Ohio – Vincent and Lo King had the same conversation all the time.

“When are you going to start working out with V.J.?” Lo King would ask her husband.

Their son, barely in grade school, was showing real promise as a basketball player. There was a future ahead.

“Honey, he’s got to fall in love with it first,” Vincent King would reply.

The elder King had played basketball professionally in Europe and knew he could teach his son all about the game. But he also knew something about himself.

“I only have one speed, and it’s pretty fast and hardcore,” Vincent King said. “I didn’t want to turn him away from the game.”

So when the father and son would head to the gym, it was all about fun. They would try to kick the ball through the basket or bounce it off the floor.

Soon, the moment came. On their way back from a recreation league game, V.J. King had something to tell his father.

“Dad, I want to be a basketball player,” he said.

When they made it home, Vincent King walked in with a big smile on his face and a message for his wife.

“I got him,” he said.
