You kids stay off my lawn!
The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month will find me beside the First Infantry Division monument in DC and then I'll mosey over to the Wall. I hope to meet up with Steve Slattery. Steve was CO of a Cav squadron about to go out on his first mission. Sgt. Donald Long was down to five days in country and when he heard about the mission he refused to head down to the safety of DiAn (zee on) base camp to begin to outprocess. "Captain Slats, you guys are heading into some real shit, you'll need all the experienced hands you have so I'm going." Steve kept insisting that Long go to the base camp, but Long refused.
Sure enough, the battalion ran into a shit storm and Slat's squadron was called upon to relieve a sister squadron. Outside his command track, trying to manuver his armor into the most effective positions, Slats was exposed when an NVA grenade was thrown close by. With no thought for his own life Long dove on the grenade, saving the life of Captain Slattery and several other soldiers in the vicinity.
Long was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Russell_Long#Medal_of_Honor_citation
I met up with Slats at the dedication of the statue next to the wall in 1983 and here is a photo of the two of us.
To all my fellow vets, welcome home.

Hey, any mod on board, I'll send you the pic of slats and me if you can post it to this thread.
