Verizon & Android news

Question, JWin;

I've never been much of an early adapter (still using my first generation Samsung Blackjack), but I've been toying with the idea of a droid incredible. Can you answer a couple of questions for me:

  • I'm assuming it's a global phone, any idea on how well it works in Europe for calls and texts?
  • Are Office documents fully editable, like with the old Pocket PCs?

Sounds like this might not be the right phone for you if you'll be jet setting out of America a lot.

AT&T has the best worldwide network. Verizon barely has one if at all.
AT&T has a much weaker US network. Verizon has the best, especially when comparing non-city use (or ironically enough, use in the city to end all cities, NYC).
I'm assuming it's a global phone, any idea on how well it works in Europe for calls and texts?
Nope, the droid phones use CDMA radio technology. AT&T / Sprint use GSM, which you find overseas most of the time. CDMA phones do not use sim cards like GSM phones.

There are some verizon phones which work overseas (Blackberry Tour does, maybe the Blackberry Storm?)

The next generation of phones with 4G technology will use LTE technology, and then Verizon & AT&T phones will use the same technology. This will make life easier on phone makers, particularly the iphone, which is only exclusive on AT&T through 2010.
Are Office documents fully editable, like with the old Pocket PCs?
I'm not sure if there is a default editor, but Documents to Go 2.0 is pretty well recommended online for $15.

This is what's going on...

I have 1 Gmail and 1 Exchange account. I have been sending some test emails to both accounts. The Gmail seems to be working alright....even though it sometimes take about 7 minutes for me to get the notification.

My exchange (University Email account that I use) was working fine, now it suddenly isn't. I have it set to vibrate and for there to be a notification icon when I get an email. It is not doing either of those things. For me to check it, I have to open the mail program, and it refreshes, causing the new email to appear.

It is showing up in my inbox (after I open it and it refreshes), but there is really no way for me to know it is there.

Some of the settings for my Exchange Email...Email Notification - ON, Notification Vibrate - ON, Notification Sound - OFF....Refresh Mail when I open - ON

Like I said, it was working then it suddenly stopped. Even the Gmail is a lot slower than it was before. No idea what the deal is.

ORD, if you need to travel out of the US, it's probably best to check all the providers to see what kind of international access plans they offer. Even Verizon smartphones will in many cases be usable overseas, but you need to be able to access the local cell system. It would be a bitch if you could make all the calls and texts you wanted, only to find out upon receiving your bill that they cost you $100 apiece.

Just a followup - Verizon does not include any of its Android offerings among its phones approved for international use. Those are limited to the BlackBerry Tour, the HTC Touch2, and one other HTC Windows phone (forgot the name).

HTC Touch Pro 2

Verizon's probably not your best bet for a world phone unless you like the blackberry lineup. The touch pro 2 is well made but it's not finger friendly (have to use the stylus for good results).

This doesn't help identify which phone to get, but helps with some other advice:

Thanks, Jwin et al. I love my old school blackjack, but not being able to edit word and excel attachments when I leave my laptop at home is driving me mad. It looks like it's either a blackberry or being assimilated into the iphone crowd.
