Mayor: Sever Thumbs of Graffiti Artists
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has suggested that those who deface freeways with graffiti should have their thumbs cut off on television.
Goodman, appearing Wednesday on the "Nevada Newsmakers" television show, said, "In the old days in France, they had beheading of people who commit heinous crimes.
"You know, we have a beautiful highway landscaping redevelopment in our downtown. We have desert tortoises and beautiful paintings of flora and fauna. These punks come along and deface it.
"I'm saying maybe you put them on TV and cut off a thumb," the mayor added. "That may be the right thing to do."
Goodman also suggested that whippings or canings should be brought back for children who get into trouble.
"I also believe in a little bit of corporal punishment going back to the days of yore, where examples have to be shown," Goodman said.
"I'm dead serious," said Goodman, adding, "Some of these (children) don't learn. You have got to teach them a lesson, and this is coming from a criminal defense lawyer."
"They would get a trial first," he added.
Another panelist on the show, Howard Rosenberg, a state university system regent, responded by saying that cutting off the thumbs of taggers won't solve the problem and Goodman should "use his head for something other than a hat rack."

CUT OFF THE TOUNGE OF ANY DUMB ASS POLITICIAN WHO SUGGESTS THINGS LIKE THIS. this is not iran. wake up. it may very well work, but that is not the point. try caning any of my nieces or nephews, I gaurantee the only thing that will come of it is I will be on death row for butchering every last bastard involved in that decision. :mad1:

sorry for the rant, but most politicians are more corrupt than the people whom they claim need the punishments. rapists, murderers, i have very little sympathy for, but when they start talking about children, they cross a line. and i am not even a parent. but to imagine any one but the parents whipping any child gets my blood boiling.

I dont have as much a problem with caning, or public flogging.. Chopping off someone's thumb is ummm no... you can't do that. Hurt them, Humiliate them, dont do irreversable physical damage. At least not for graffiti.

Go ahead and cut the thumb off, morons. You use your index finger to operate a can of spray paint.

What do you do to repeat offenders? You can only cut off so many thumbs. Generally, two. I think. Just a sec.....ummmm.....one......two. Yes, two. You can only cut off two thumbs before you run out.

I've always thought 2 rape convictions should equal the loss of 2 testicles.

The graffiti artists, if convicted, should be forced to watch Kevin Federline and Vanilla Ice videos non-stop for about 72 hours. Let the punishment fit the crime.
