Vanderbilt Commodores (official thread)

Reports: Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea takes head coach job at Vanderbilt

Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea will reportedly take over the reins at Vanderbilt, his alma mater, after three years leading the Irish defense, two of which featured undefeated regular seasons and almost assuredly two Playoff berths. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg was the first of multiple reports with the news Monday morning.

A walk-on fullback for the Commodores in 2002-04, Lea was at the top of the list of expected candidates when Vanderbilt fired Derek Mason two weeks ago, and though the athletic director suggested an offensive focus in the coaching search, Lea remained an obvious possibility. He has simply been too successful at Notre Dame to not have been.

Vanderbilt rewards coach Clark Lea with contract extension

Vanderbilt has signed football coach Clark Lea to a contract extension, the school announced Monday.

Terms were not disclosed, but sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel that Lea received a three-year extension that will carry him through the 2029 season.

"Vanderbilt is home, it is such an honor for me to lead our football program," Lea, 41, said in a statement. "The only way that we accomplish the mission we have set forth for Vanderbilt Football is with the vision and support from Chancellor [Daniel] Diermeier and [athletic director] Candice Lee. To have them acknowledge the progress we've made to this point, and to commit to seeing us push further on our journey means everything to me. Like everyone who is a part of our team, I will work to earn it every day, and recognize the great responsibility I have with the incredible opportunity and support I've been given. I also want to thank the members of our program, both student-athletes and staff. Their hard work and sacrifice is what allows for progress in our quest to build a program that makes all of Vanderbilt and Nashville proud."

I'd love to hear that performance evaluation.

"Well coach, you are still breathing, the team still exists and the kids did well in school. We're really looking forward to the next three years and thanks for not leaving yet."

Vanderbilt fan nets Troll Job of the Year with post preceding Texas matchup

The Vanderbilt Commodores are preparing for a matchup of top-25 teams this Saturday as they welcome the No. 5-ranked Texas Longhorns to town.

As the Longhorns make their to Nashville, they'll be staring across the sideline at an opponent that has already upset both Alabama and Virginia Tech earlier this season. While Vandy fans are ready for what might be the biggest game in their program's history in quite some time, they also aren't afraid to take some shots at the Longhorns along the way, either.

Texas students went viral Saturday evening in their matchup with the Georgia Bulldogs when they littered the field with water bottles. While the SEC officials did nothing in-game to penalize Texas, the SEC issued a heavy $250,000 fine to the University of Texas and threatened to end alcohol sales in Austin if the school didn't comply with its list of items that needed to be done, including ensuring that this behavior would never happen again.

After using video surveillance, many Texas students were sent text messages earlier this week that they will not be able to return to a game in Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium for the remainder of 2024 due to their conduct. Now, Vanderbilt fans are pouring it on, no pun intended.

This particular Vandy fan wins "Troll Job of the Year" for creating a post on X that the Commodores were installing "temporary netting" to help with the threat of Texas fans making their way into the stadium. He noted that the netting "may stay up" for the Tennessee game later this year.

Though this post was a troll job and not a real-life initiative by Vanderbilt, that didn't stop it from going viral on social media.

Just to be clear: There won't actually be netting to keep water bottles from pelting the field, but the SEC will be on high alert the rest of the year in policing fan behavior.

Though Texas is a heavy 18.5-point favorite coming into the game against Vanderbilt, the Longhorns better be careful. Diego Pavia and that RPO game has been trouble for several teams this year and Texas could be no different.

Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia denied TRO request for added eligibility

A federal judge on Tuesday denied Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia's request for a temporary restraining order that would grant him another year of eligibility -- but did not close the matter entirely.

Pavia sued the NCAA in federal court Friday in Nashville, Tennessee, arguing that his two seasons playing at a junior college shouldn't count toward his Division I eligibility since he was unable to profit from his name, image and likeness during that time....

Pavia's attorneys argued that Pavia would suffer immediate and irreparable harm without relief from the court because the transfer portal opens on Dec. 9 and that waiting even one more day will "place him between a rock and a hard place" in regards to negotiating an NIL deal at Vanderbilt or transferring to another school.

"Given that Plaintiff has almost certainly been aware of the challenged bylaws and his ineligibility to play college football in the 2025-26 season for quite some time and has been discussing possible resolution with the NCAA, the Court is not persuaded that an ex parte order is justified," William Campbell Jr., chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, wrote in his ruling. "This is particularly the case here where the Plaintiff seeks prospective injunctive relief, not merely preservation of the status quo."
