Vanderbilt Commodores (official thread)

Speaking of academic smack - Florida and Georgia are strong, Vandy is in the same class as Northwestern, ATM is not Texas, but it's also not Ol' Miss, Miss State, or Auburn. I understand Kentucky has moved up quite a few notches, but I'm hard pressed to understand how given the level of incompetence in the state government. I'm sure ORD would know more about that.

The Big 10, with the exception of Indiana, enjoys a powerful base in research funding despite the attempts of several governors to try and kill the goose that is laying the golden eggs.

As for Vandy, beautiful campus, strong alumni base, Nashville is cool, but getting anywhere athletically in football and basketball would require multiple meteor strikes across a wide swath of the south. Not a bad idea, but very unlikely.

Baseball school. All eggs in that basket for men’s athletics.

Vanderbilt University senior Sarah Fuller makes college football history as kicker

"I represent the little girls out there who wanted to do this or have thought about playing football or any sport, really," she said after the game.

Vanderbilt University senior Sarah Fuller made history as the first woman to play in a Power Five football game when the Commodores faced the Tigers of the University of Missouri on Saturday.

Fuller, a soccer player by training, joined the game after halftime as Vanderbilt's placekicker following absences from players who were exposed to Covid-19.

The 21-year-old from Texas had recently finished soccer season as her team’s starting goalkeeper, helping the Commodores win their first SEC title in women’s soccer since 1994.

She acknowledged the magnitude of the moment earlier this week, saying she will play with the slogan “Play like a girl” on the back of her helmet. Fuller said the decision was a nod to the nonprofit organization Play Like a Girl, which aims to expose girls to opportunities in sports and in STEM-related educational and professional fields.

Vanderbilt fires football coach Derek Mason during 0-8 campaign

Vanderbilt fired football coach Derek Mason on Sunday, one day after a 41-0 loss at Missouri dropped the Commodores' record to 0-8.

Mason had a 27-55 record in his sixth season at Vanderbilt. He is the sixth-winningest coach in program history and only the second to lead the Commodores to two bowl games.

In a statement on Twitter, Mason wrote, "It has truly been my honor to have been given the opportunity to teach, mentor, champion and coach hundreds of Vanderbilt young men and one courageous female."

You will be hard pressed to find a bigger advocate of opportunities for women than I, but I am disturbed by one aspect of Ms. Fuller's debut on Saturday. Frankly I am surprised "#metoo" hasn't been heard from. It may even be the real reason the Vanderbilt coach was fired.

Men have being playing college football for over a century. But that does not mean Ms. Fuller should have been forced to wear the same style uniform as the men.

I have seen women play football before - and they do so in lingerie.

Gordon Gee would never have let this happen.
