LOSER: THE USC DEFENSE

A shaky defense held USC back from winning the Pac-12 and reaching the College Football Playoff last year, and by many indications, the group took a step forward this offseason with the additions of multiple impact transfers and highly-rated recruits. If Week 0 is any indication, though, the Trojans still have much work to do on that side of the ball. San Jose State tallied 28 points Saturday night, moving the ball with ease at times. A 28-yard Spartan passing touchdown against a busted coverage with eight seconds left in the first half was reminiscent of the plays allowed by the Trojans’ leaky defensive backfield a year ago.
LINCOLN RILEY ON THE DEFENSIVE STRUGGLES
"The quarterback is a good player. We had a spy on him a lot of times. A couple of times, we got lost in there and got a little too aggressive. A couple of times, he just flat-out outran us. He's a good player. That was the disappointing part. The penalties and the busted coverage before half are the things that were frustrating. It had the makings of being a good defensive performance. But those are the mistakes you have to correct...
"Everybody is going to write the narrative after the first game. It's going to be a climb. It's going to be a climb. I like what I see out there in terms of our good plays, how our guys are flying around, and the depth that we have. We will continue to improve the baseline for that group. The ceiling for that group is much higher than it was 12 months ago. No matter what the score was... If this was a three-point game, 28-point game or 50-point game -- there's going to be that climb to the next step. That's where our focus is going to stay. I love what we have in there. We have a lot of work to do, and we're the right people to get it done."
USC: Coordinator Alex Grinch's defense still has plenty of work to do, particularly against mobile quarterbacks such as Cordeiro. While the defensive front looked much better, the other two levels were unimpressive. They've got time to address it, but Notre Dame is only five games away.
