I think the more underreported aspect of this “story” is the tumultuous offseason, even prior to the Zach Smith story.
Let’s not forget Greg Schiano was hired as HC in Tennessee and Alex Grinch was essentially our new DC. Then Schiano gets absolutely railroaded by Clay Travis, the media, and ultimately the University of Tennessee.
An off-season built around bringing in a new DC and transitioning to life without Coombs/Schiano is flipped upside down as Meyer now needs to sell Grinch on essentially accepting a demotion before he’s even started his job. Meanwhile, you have to reindoctrinate Schiano into the program, which should be easy enough, but the guy just lost his opportunity at a top 15-20ish coaching position in the country. Had to be demoralizing as hell to see that reaction in Knoxville and then the fallout.
Fast forward a few months, Urban Meyer is now essentially seen as a woman abuser as Brett McMurphy rolls out his hit job piece in which a troubled marriage is launched at the feet of Meyer even though Meyer’s direct boss was first made aware of situation and the proper chain of command was followed (not to mention no arrests were ever made).
So before we have even kicked the ball off on the season, we have a current coach who was railroaded in TN and a current coach who is fired over a protection order while dropping his children off, and then the backlash from that troubled marriage.
Just a shitty year from the jump, IMO. I’ve never experienced a more disappointing 12-1 season. The season was essentially ruined before it even started, IMO.
You go 12-1 and basically feel like you’ve had your balls kicked for an entire season. Certainly, part of this retirement has to be the question “is this all really worth it?”.
Right now, I don’t think it is. But I think that equation changes with time and a fresh situation.....again, just my opinion.
