We see this every time a traditional "glory" school gets a new head coach. It's easy to sell a dream, it's harder to keep selling it if it's not working out. I guarantee a 7-5 season would take a lot of momentum out of that sail.

Pretty strong guarantee. Let's not act like 7-5 wouldn't be a good thing for them right now. They went 5-7 last year, and of course they would sell the "winning record in the first season" stuff.


Anybody remember Jim Tressel's record in his first season? 7-5.

I also remember Tressel pulling in arguably the #1 recruiting class in the nation after that 7-5 year. A 7-5 year will not hurt Tennessee's recruiting being that it's year 1 of the Butch Jones era.

I don't want to derail this thread too much, so feel free to split this mods.

I was probably a little over-assertive with that "guarantee" but I stand by the sentiment that these coaches see instant recruiting success early on in their tenure because they're able to sell something they haven't had to back up with results.

7-5 would hurt their momentum in my opinion. There's a reason our coaches have touted 12-0 so much lately: It matters to recruits.

I think the salient phrase is "at best" 7-5. Here's Tennessee's schedule this year. I see losses against Oregon, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama. Auburn and Missouri are tossups for this year's Tennessee's team. Assuming they win one of those, and every game they're supposed to win (Kentucky and Venderbilt will be competitive, at least), it will be a 6-6 year. Personally, I see a losing season unless Jones pulls off a miracle. Now, I don't think this will impact the recruiting class much because Jones has proved to be a great recruiter. And I base this from the fact that Bell was eventually torn between tOSU and the Vols. And I also read that article that claimed that if Dooley had been as competent as Jones, Bell would've selected Tennessee a lot sooner than NLOID. Jones gave us a run for Bell in just 1 month, guys. I'm sure he is a great recruiter. Now is he a good coach, or is he another Zook? Time will tell.

Ex-Vols WR Vic Wharton tweets he’s transferring to Cal

In a tweet posted to his Twitter account Saturday, the wide receiver revealed that he will be transferring to Cal and continuing his collegiate playing career with the Golden Bears. Tennessee head coach Butch Jones acknowledged last month that Wheaton was moving on from the Vols and was “going through the process of deciding what is the best fit for him moving forward.

Butch Jones has brought in some really good talent here. The question is, will he be able to develop it/be given the time do so ? I remember a certain Ron Zook doing the same at Florida & not being able to achieve success, yet another man fostered his undoubtedly talented squad into a force to be reckoned with.
