University of Cincinnati talk (split from Matt James thread)

I think that says more about the type of students applying to OSU than it actually says about the minimum requirements. Again, I'm not saying UC is better than OSU. I am saying that UC and OSU have simillar minimum requirements and that UC does, in fact, have programs that are world renown and for one idiot to make a statement that UC is a 'poor' academic institution without stating any facts and only comparring it to schools that are better is foolish, ignorant and flat out stupid.

Nope, wrong again (and straw man again). Acceptance rates are 75% for UC, and 59% for Ohio State. Higher average scores plus lower acceptance rate = higher admission standards.

Once again I never said 'poor.' Just please stop. The more you try the worse you look.

Honestly, do you ever get tired of being wrong, or is that just your shtick?

You criticize someone for citing 2007 U.S. News rankings, and you cite an article from May 2005?
uh....the news rankings are to be updated every year...the article I posted was an update on UC's actual admission standards...do you think they've declined in the last four years??

But since you take more stock in an 2007 ranking that couldn't even get the enrollment right...

no, you keep drinking the d-bag cool aide of one poster who hates UC fans so the education in Clifton must be terrible.

...and you wonder why more people in Cincinnati AREN'T OSU fans...unbelievable.

better than your's shtick of being ignorant. Do I really look worse? really? you think so? that's your opinion...the rep i've gotten for my opinions and points about UC says otherwise.
fine you said 'not highly ranked academically' and then you said the kid would be making a 'Huge mistake' by picking UC...if you did NOT intend to say 'poor' you cerainlty spelled it out that way. In any case, I'm done. You hate UC on all levels and I will not sway your feelings one way or the other and there is no sense in arguing the point any more.

If you were referring to my post, it wasn't outdated. USNews does those rankings yearly. Again, here is the link. It uses the numbers from the 2008-2009 academic year.

Edit: Of course they use the 2007 acceptance rates for the rankings of 2008-2009 if that is what you were referring to.

Let's see, first of all, I have gotten way more rep than you (including this particular argument). Not that any rep really [censored]ing matters.

Second, I made more than one point about it being a poor choice for him. Yet you pick out one and make an entire straw man argument from it (you have pretty much stated you made an inference that was not true).

Finally, I have been using the 2009 USNWR rankings so your whole article age vs. me doesn't work. As I have stated, UC has some good programs. Yet overall UC is not on par with Ohio State, Notre Dame, or Florida academically. That was only one of my points, and for the most part the only one you have been attacking the whole time (with false accusations mind you). The others are football/sports tradition, campus, and fanbase. Add up all the points and that is why I think it's a poor choice, not that UC is poor academically.

USNews doesn't rank UC as a top 100 university but as a top 100 public university (which tells me they are probably between 90 and 100). Ohio State says we are top 20 and we were no. 19 last I looked. Anyway, being 90th something public university is not good. Really. That means they are probably 300 something if you factor in the private universities.

Other thing is I guess nobody expected UC to be mediocre/poor all accross the board. However, some of the highest ranked programs you cite are either low impact programs or not opened in every university.

I will talk about science and engineering since that is my expertise. Paleontology is ranked 7th but it is a low impact field. Rest are ranked 20 or below.

I'm not here to say that UC is going to start going toe to toe on every recruit with OSU now and in the future but if UC can keep coach Kelly and continue to win double-digit games or close to it then I would expect them to be able to keep a good number of the blue-chippers from the greater Cincinnati area at home. Cincinnati is not that bad of a place to play, I don't think so anyway. The stadium is substancially smaller in comparison to OSU's but it is unique. I don't know if any of you have been there but when it's full it does provide a very cool atmosphere in my opinion. And then there is the element of having all your friends and family within a 30 minute radius and they can come watch you play whenever they choose. There is something about the place that I can see why is would be a viable option for hometown recruits.

Plus, the Deja Vu' is like 30 minutes away!

Go through those science rankings and tell me where OSU and Florida are. All of them are way higher ranked than UC (those rankings are nothing special, sorry). Plus those are some serious specialization programs (Opera/voice, really?). In Medicine Ohio State is better. In sciences and engineering Ohio State is better by a lot. Same with law school (35), business (26....UC is a joke), and education (16). Even in the good programs at UC they do not match up with OSU.

University of Cincinnati To Raise The Bar On Admissions Standards

The info provided from the USN&WR rankings is from the 2009 edition, which includes the most recent completed academic year's reported statistics, though the ACT averages are from the 2008-09 incoming freshman class, so that is quite up-to-date. And the article you link also includes an alternate admission criterion of "Top 75 percent class rank and high school GPA 2.5 or higher, and ACT 20 or higher," which would probably not even be good enough for an OSU branch campus these days. When the 2010 rankings are released, including the information about UC's better-than-ever freshman class, I seriously doubt we will see a substantial difference in UC's national standing.

If you are a UC fan or alum, you are right to be proud of their improving standards and increased focus on academics, and it's certainly not a "terrible" school, but there is literally no comparison with the first-tier national universities which are also vying for Matt James' football services, and a handful of minor-program rankings from UC's brag-sheet don't count for much. And, as has been mentioned, UC is not a "top-100 University", it is a top-100 public university.

Yes, Ohio State is still ranked 19th. UC is not in the top 68 (which is all they show with free access). So just with public schools OSU is rated 50 higher, and more like 60+. Which means when you add in private schools the difference is even larger and more than likely over 100. That is not a small difference no matter how much anyone questions the rankings.

We all know the way things are in the rankings that really matter - average penis size.

Fortunately, my measurement hardly affected tOSU's overall average.

The effects of cold weather and inconsistent measurement tools has always made that stat a bone of contention amongst stat heads.

and I am really hoping Matt James is not using that as a deciding criteria.

In an academic debate, you've chosen to use the word 'crtieria' following the singular article "a"?

That helps your argument as much as the size of my dick. :tongue2:

usage The plural criteria has been used as a singular for over half a century <let me now return to the third criteria ? R. M. Nixon> <that really is the criteria ? Bert Lance>. Many of our examples, like the two foregoing, are taken from speech. But singular criteria is not uncommon in edited prose, and its use both in speech and writing seems to be increasing. Only time will tell whether it will reach the unquestioned acceptability of agenda.

I am just on the cutting edge of language.
