Top football uniforms stand the test of time
Eric Lacy / The Detroit News
The top five most identifiable uniforms in college football:
* Alabama: Numbers on the helmets say it all. Sure does make it easy for fans to find their favorite player on the field. This school exudes tradition, just like every other one on this list. These uniforms haven't been changed much since the days of Paul "Bear" Bryant. There's something to be said about honoring history and those that came before you, concepts that folks at this university embrace.
* Notre Dame: The "golden domers" also love to embrace their past, and it's a tradition on campus that the helmets are painted on Monday evening following every game. Notre Dame wears navy jerseys at home and white on the road. But every now and then, for a little luck of the Irish, they'll break out the green jerseys for special occasions at Notre Dame Stadium.
* Southern California: The "Spirit of Troy" logo has withstood the test of time because it still looks cool and is associated with success. The yellow of USC is striking, especially the stripes on the arms, and the maroon is the staple color that's been associated with so many great football players.
* Michigan: In some ways, the Wolverines' look is pretty basic -- blue jerseys at home and stripeless pants. But the helmet truly adds to the ensemble with the wings and three stripes. Too many recruits to count have said they picked Michigan because of the helmets.
* Ohio State: Another signature helmet that's simple, yet very sophisticated -- silver with the scarlet-white-black striping down the middle. But what makes this helmet truly distinctive are the buckeye stickers for team and individual accomplishments.
