UF OL Ronnie "Taz" Wilson (official thread)

The fact that he was a prospective recruit of Ohio State and a member of this online forum should have literally zero impact on people's perception of the situation. Obviously, he (like every other person in such a position) is 'innocent until proven guilty', but the fact remains that every indication is that the guy not only drives around with automatic weapons in tow, but has no qualms with taking them out and using them. I, like anyone else, hope that this is an isolated incident and that he is able to right his personal ship--but let's not start crucifying people here for calling things how they see them.

Righting his personal ship like Troy Smith did? (Granted Troy's run-ins didn't involve firearms.)

Unfortunately, IMO, the people who are "calling them as they see them" are only seeing that it is a Gator.

vr, I agree that folks should be able to voice their opinions, but I think comments like "Glad we didn't sign him" aren't called for...yet. If these allegations--and that's just what they are right now--indeed prove true, then such comments can have merit.

These exact comments in a thread on an active prospect would be viewed as "bashing" as thus removed. We make many posts saying "he's still a Buckeye in our hearts", etc., so I think we should take our collective foot of his throat for now...

Taz - if your shit is not together - then get it together and steer clear of trouble.
If your shit is together and this is just you being in the wrong place, with the wrong people or situation, at the wrong time, then make sure two or more of those things are not true in your future.

No matter what it is, get back in good graces and make the most of that opportunity we all congratulated you on taking so few years ago. Everyone here with a memory of things wants to see you do well - so go, do that, do well.

Exactly! So many people are pulling for you on and off the field, Taz. Represent yourself, your team, your family with dignity and pride.

This was posted in the police blotter thread about 3 hours ago. I'm pasting it in here, rather than merging the post, to keep the timeline of the posts in sequence with the time when information was posted in this thread.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida offensive lineman Ronnie Matthew Wilson was arrested Thursday, accused of firing a semiautomatic rifle in the air during a dispute with another man that started in a nightclub.

Wilson, 19, has been suspended from team activities, coach Urban Meyer said. Wilson was charged with aggravated assault, simple battery and the use or display of a concealed weapon during the commission of a felony, according to jail records.

"Obviously, this is a major concern," Meyer said.

The victim, whose name was not released, said Wilson spit on him and slapped him on the right side of his face inside the XS nightclub. Wilson told police he had spit on the victim but denied hitting him.

When Wilson left the club, the victim followed him in his car and called police to give them vehicle information. According to a police report, Wilson pulled into a parking lot, where he took the rifle out of his trunk and fired one shot in the air because he wanted the other man "to know how it felt to be scared."

Fearing he would be shot, the victim ducked down and put his car into reverse. As he was going backward, he heard a gunshot, the report said.
Police said the victim left the parking lot and was followed by Wilson, who broke off the chase when he saw police cars.

According to the report, Wilson then went to an apartment complex and hid the rifle and magazine in his cousin's apartment, where they were recovered by police.

Wilson was being held in the Alachua County Jail awaiting his first court appearance. It was not known if he had a lawyer.

The university's sports information office said it had no comment on the arrest.

Wilson, 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, enrolled as a redshirt freshman in the spring of 2005.

This is the sentence that bothers me. Everything up to that point, Taz could reasonably claim he felt threatened...but once he chased after the guy--after discharging his weapon already--now makes him the aggressor.

I'm sure we'll get the inside skinny from THE SOURCE... but I believe this implies that Taz had no idea what the intentions of 'the victim' was when 'the victim' was following Taz with his car... Taz may very well have thought 'the victim' could have a gun in that car and was preparing to shoot him... and Taz was indeed afraid himself.. so when he got to his car.. he wanted to let 'the victim' know what it felt like to be on the other end of the fear...

If this is the case, I can empathize.. being in a very similar situation myself in college... the only twist was.. my future bro-in-law took a shotgun away from the other fella.. who had fetched it from his car... and bro-in-law proceeded to harass him back.. pointing it at him till he left the parking lot... and kept the shotgun !!!

Hope this situation works itself out for him. Seems like a good kid from his earlier associaton with this site. For me the word "magazine" gets me the most.

Here's hoping for the most positive outcome

The whole shotgun incident makes me wonder if he had visions of what happened to Darrent Williams going through his head. Similar circumstances as far as an athlete on the most followed team in town getting into an argument in a club. Add to that the petty jealousy that gets directed at scholarship athletes by students paying their way through school by alternate means.

I just read this entire thread, from the first post about this arrest. Taz chose to go to Florida but remained in touch here from time to time. So, it' s natural that some folks here feel a real attachment to someone playing, even if they never met him. During the recruiting process, some here did meet him. Yet, others know him. I wonder if we need to think about how that shapes our perceptions of Taz?

I am most influenced by the points that Vince and Mili made.

IF
Taz is guilty, he carries automatic weapons in his trunk and is not afraid to use them. Furthermore, he is not afraid to use them in anger.

Buying an automatic weapon and carrying it as a concealed weapon in one's car may be at the limit, but you can still call that a "bad decision".

Stepping out of your car and firing that weapon into the air, because you feel threatened by someone following you after an altercation, can be explained as a "bad decision".

Chasing that person and breaking off only when police cars interfere is something much more serious than a "bad decision".

And, if people want to say that on BP, mindful that these are allegations at this point, then I think they should be able to do so.
