Continue to hate the fact this tournament is expanding in 2016 with eight more countries. It makes qualification completely pointless (for some countries).

Martin Samuel, in the Daily Mail, wrote a funny piece on Michel Platini in relation to the tournament expanding.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/eu...-Platini--style-substance--Martin-Samuel.html

If you average/combine the FIFA Rankings and ESPN SPI with the eight highest-ranking UEFA countries that didn't make the tournament, you get;

Switzerland, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Norway, Serbia, Turkey, Slovenia, Hungary.

People like Sepp Blatter and Platini just want to leave a legacy, like expanding a tournament or putting the World Cup in Africa/Middle East.

The point everyone has a problem with, you get to watch everybody (50% of UEFA more/less). So it's a water-down tournament and kind of like a 96-team NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

Like if Ohio State let everyone in with a 2.0 GPA and an 50 percentile ACT.

But really, it's just Michel Platini trying to show he did something in office. He's the genius who wants a Winter World Cup.

If the teams you want to see were as fun/good as you think then those teams should do a better job of qualifying.

_______

Separating this comment from the last - adding 8 teams would be a disaster along the lines of going to 128 in the NCAA tournament.

It's done though. There's no going back too (which isn't good). You rarely ever see tournaments contract.

Part of me thinks the move is because Michel Platini is incompetent. Another part thinks that Platini wants to benefit his home country (France 2016) w/ extra tourism. And yet another part thinks he wants to leave a legacy (like Sepp Blatter wanting a Nobel Peace Prize for bring the WC to Africa and Middle East).

There are 53 members of UEFA. You have 24 in the tournament (that's almost 50 percent).

I like that ESPN picked up the UEFA Euro Tournaments. Would be nice if they could pick up whatever South America's version of the Continental tournament is too - little bit different style of play and different stadiums/traditions...etc

That's a darn shame. I probably read too quickly to see that. I guess this is the era in which we live: everyone gets an A for effort and $$$ trumps all.

Though I will say some friends of mine who went to South Africa loved it. So I don't have a huge issue with the WC there.

Belgium was in the Germany/Turkey group. Norway finished level on points with Portugal. Bosnia finished with 20 points then was drawn Portugal in the playoffs and Turkey was drawn with Croatia, while Ireland got fucking Estonia. Sometimes shit happens. I watch sports to be entertained and Bosnia and Belgium are more entertaining than Greek and British anti-football.

It isn't comparable to the NCAA tournament expanding or the World Cup expanding or anything else. Expanding the World Cup just means more shit teams from shit federations, Europe has the highest concentration of quality nations.
