UConn donor demands return of $3M donation, then allows them to keep it

Pfffft...You didn't account for inflation. Some college football fan you are! :shake:

[insincere tone Ubet] Tough loss last night in Athens Woof... [/insincere tone Ubet]

Best quote of the night from Dawgvent went like this: "We can't beat FU in a bulldog mascot contest."

Whatevs. My interest level in college hoops rates slightly lower than my interest in a Terry's Turf Club cheeseburger. Just not something I follow too closely. And given the historical performance of my alma mater, can you blame me?

I like Coach Fox and appreciate his barnstorming efforts to build up the program. Seems like he really wants to make a mountain out of a mole hill with the hoops program - that's admirable. I just need to see sustained success before I start weaping openly (like after this years WLOCP, or the Falcons loss to the Packers)

The guy has been a major contributor for at least 13 years. The previous AD asked for his input on at least one coaching hire. The current AD completely blows him off and hires someone the main booster, and apparently others (these guys do all know each other after all), didn't want so he writes what he considered a personal 1 on 1 letter to the guy who [censored]ed him off.

No one contributes that kind of money for that long to a school like UConn without having a great deal of love for the school. When you get a guy like that to the point he is bitching about the money and wants his name taken off the damn building, experience tells me you've done a spectacular job of failing to manage a relationship.

The last thing I see here is an out of control, prima donna booster.

Agree to disagree, I guess, because that's exactly what I see. And if he really thinks he's getting his money back (short of UConn willingly giving back to him or other facts coming out that they had some sort of arrangement at the time he gave the cash), then you can add a few other things to that list, IMO.

I have to disagree. It's a cumulative donation of $7MM. That's shouldn't be the lifeblood of a BCS program, and if it is, they should seriously reconsider their priorities. Looking at UCONN from the perspective of a university that raised $300MM last year and is ramping up for a $2.5B campaign, might skew my view a bit Ill admit. Still, no university should be compromising its governance for seven million dollars.

Secondly, biting that particular hand may have been exactly the right thing to do. He's a non-alumnus, jock sniffer who has donated overwhelmingly to athletics. We're not talking about Les Wexner or John Ong here. Get too far into bed with a character like that and let him--despite no formal role on the board--start influencing policy decisions and hiring, and it's a slippery path to becoming Auburn and Bobby Lowder. Just a hunch, but I wouldn't be surprised if the UCONN President and AD are relieved to have washed their hands of this clown. Sometimes, money comes at too high a price. This looks like one of those instances.

No, Donny, these men are nihilists, there's nothing to be afraid of.

What you say about Pasq may be true, but that's not my point. Something tells me this guy and his fragile ego would be [censored] even if the UConn AD had hired Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden or Urban Meyer--he's more [censored] because he didn't get to weigh in than he is [censored] that the choice was Pasq.

If that's all he's pissed about then the AD's a dumbass. This guy IS your football program...

Boosters have a lot of input all over the country and influential boosters are often involved in coaching searces from what I've previously read/heard.

So in my opinion, without knowing all the facts, I'd say that this is the fault of Uconn.

Yes the guy probably has a massive ego, but when you pay 3 million dollars is that really surprising to the AD, or anyone for that matter???

Agreed re: Terry's. It's good, but overrated and overpriced. Try Arthur's in Hyde Park instead - they had a fire not to long ago and will hopefully be opening back soon. They have all their burgers on special Sunday-Tuesday.

I disagree with this. It'd be one thing if they made a respectable hire, but they completely shit the bed. Like horribly shit the bed, and hired a retread who sucks everywhere he goes.

Just an awful hire. And this guy just gave them 3 mil. 3 mil that the AD just shit down the drain on a coach they'll prob have to fire in 2 years.

I'd be irate too.

But if they had just hired a respectable coach, and he pulled this stunt, I'd think he was an idiot.

Well the one thing I do know for sure; anytime I see a messy split and people asking for the return of their stuff I can't help but think of Sam. I think he pretty much captured the boosters side of this many moons ago.

By any reasonable measure, this contention regarding Pasqualoni does not stand up to examination.

He has won in the Big East. He had a clear winning record while at Syracuse - taking Syracuse to 1st place in the Big East (in the years of round-robin competition) 4 out of 12 times, in the two years prior to round-robin they were generally up with the rest of their Big East competition - excepting the 'Canes. He also led them to one 2nd place finish and four 3rd place finishes.

True, this was all in the Big East - but he isn't someone who sucks wherever he goes, and this was in a Big East that hosted Miami and had a competitive Virginia Tech in its midst.

He is however, by definition, a retread.

Reopening the first week in February.

If it's burgers, I'm more of a dive bar fan. Quatman's, Salem Gardens, Friendly Stop, Nick and Tom's, Anderson Township Pub or Kramer's in Dayton.

But giving one donor a voice in the coach selection seems bush league to me. Maybe he could pay Rich Rod's back taxes to WVU.
