UC regents set Dec. 14 for decision on UCLA's Big Ten move

The University of California regents will decide Dec. 14 whether UCLA can depart the Pac-12 for the Big Ten.

The regents met Thursday in San Francisco and discussed whether to "affirm, overturn, or abstain" from action on UCLA's decision to become a Big Ten member in 2024, scheduling a new meeting to make their final decision.

"Following a report and discussion on the impacts of conference realignment related to the student-athlete experience, the Board of Regents announced that it will hold a special meeting on December 14th to make a final determination regarding UCLA's intention to join the Big Ten conference," the group said in a statement released Thursday. "This additional time will allow the Board to fully consider the information presented today and address any additional questions that arise. It will also allow the Office of the President to make specific recommendations on how the university will better support and enhance the student-athlete experience."

UCLA announced June 30 it would be joining the Big Ten, along with USC, a private institution, beginning in 2024. The Big Ten in August finalized a new media rights agreement -- set to bring in more than $1 billion per year -- with both UCLA and USC included.

Big Ten completes 7-year, $7 billion media rights agreement with Fox, CBS, NBC

There has to be some contract/binding agreement between UCLA (& USC) and the Big Ten for the networks to pony up the $7B TV deal. If the UCLA Regents try to block UCLA moving to the B1G you don't need a crystal ball to see a massive lawsuit coming.

I can't imagine the powers that be in the B1G will ever consider Cal in the future. That shitshow board of regents will get one seat at the table via UCLA. I think the thought of giving them a second is toxic now.
Yeah I wouldn't after this bullshit also they are supposed to decide in like 2 or 3 hours if they kick the can again I wouldn't be surprised if people sue

They're clearly inclined to block the move and are stalling for time to see if their lawyers can work up an angle that will prevent the B1G, NBC, CBS and FOX from scorching them like Dresden.

Re:
"In the college football universe, one of those could be what if current Ohio State coach Ryan Day had accepted an assistant coaching position at Oregon during the Chip Kelly days. The two coaches are both from New Hampshire and were on the same staff for the Wildcats for a season in 2002 when Day was the tight ends coach and Kelly was the offensive coordinator. Day was Kelly’s quarterback for four years before that, so the two are close friends, even to this day."

Just sayin': I'll throw this out there. If O'Brien gets the BC job, would Kelly be a good fit as OC for Ohio State?

An exclusive look at details of Chip Kelly’s two-year contract extension from UCLA

MARCH 3, 2023

Showing they believe Chip Kelly is the right coach to lead UCLA into the Big Ten era, school officials on Friday gave Kelly a two-year contract extension and accompanying small raise that runs through the 2027 season.

According to the contract reviewed by The Times, Kelly will make $6.1 million during the 2023 and 2024 seasons — a $300,000 raise over the previous amounts that included $1-million retention bonuses — before getting a bump to $6.2 million per season in 2025, 2026 and 2027. His contract was restructured to add money to his annual salary while removing retention bonuses.
.
.
.
Kelly’s buyout calls for him to receive $8.5 million if he’s dismissed before December 2023 and $4.27 million if he is terminated before December 2024. That amount drops to zero in December 2025.

Kelly, who turns 60 in November, would owe the school $3 million if he left before the end of this season (i.e. 2023) and $1.5 million if he departed before the end of the 2025 season.

Just sayin': I can't believe that Kelly would have left UCLA and over > $6M a year for the OC at Iowa job. However, I'd guess that he is like a group of other college coaches fed up with recruiting/transfers/NIL and would just like an NFL job. If UCLA really wanted to fire Kelly and he wanted the OC position at Ohio State; UCLA might be willing to just agree to part ways.

Chip Kelly Interviews With NFC Team for Offensive Coordinator Position, per Report

Chip Kelly’s interest in returning to the NFL appears to be getting more serious. The UCLA coach interviewed on Tuesday with the Seattle Seahawks for their offensive coordinator opening, according to The Ringer’s Benjamin Solak.
.
.
.
Kelly has been mentioned among NFL circles in recent weeks despite signing a contract extension with the Bruins last year that runs through the 2027 season. He would surely take a pay cut from his $6 million annual salary at UCLA to take a coordinator position in the pros. Yet judging from the amount of chatter regarding Kelly’s NFL interest, it appears that he’s very interested in getting out of college football.
