U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

Holy [Mark May], what happened to El Tri?

:slappy:

That was some crazy shit...but I'm not laughing at anyone for getting blown out until I see the final score of the Argentina game.

A win tomorrow would probably be the biggest W in the history of the USMNT.... I can't wait to for this team to get a shot at beating the white and blue sky.

It will be very interesting to see how Klinsmann lines 'em up without Bobby Wood. Zusi for one of Jones or Bedoya? Who gets the other midfield spot?

Zusi likely replaces Bedoya, and my guess for the other replacement would be either Beckerman or Nagbe. I would prefer Nagbe, as it would signify the US want to go out there and try to win. With Beckerman starting, that just tells me they want to park the bus and hope for a miracle 0-0 to send it into extra time (not going to happen).

There is no extra time right? They went right to penalties with Colombia and Peru. If that's the case, then maybe a park it could be more beneficial?

If it's tied, there is 30 minutes of extra time still. I completely missed that game, so I really don't know what happened, but everything I'm reading says they play the normal extra time rules of a traditional knockout game.

Interesting, because they went straight to penalties (I was watching), and the commentators were saying how different that was to other competitions

Only the final will have extra time per Copa rules. Quarterfinal and Semifinal games go straight to a shoot out.

Fair enough. Thanks for clarifying.

@Bucklion surviving 90, and going straight to PKs would give the US a shot, but I just can't see them being able to sit back and defend a team as strong as Argentina for 90 minutes. Maybe Jon Brooks goes all Terminator on everyone.

I just saw a lineup prediction that had Wondo and Beckerman in. *sigh*

I like Wondo....I really do. I just don't see the value in throwing bench players who are benched because they are limited out there vs bench players who are benched because they haven't reached their full potential yet. You know what Wondo is. Let's use this to give Nagbe or Pulisic some experience against some of the best in the world. Build for the WC. I'm not saying tank this game/tournament and start all the young guys......but with the hand that has been dealt, utilize it to make the team better going forward.

I agree... I am a boring-assed person who likes defensive midfielders, so Beckerman has really always been one of my favorite US players. But their run as starters is likely over, so there's really no reason to throw them out there tonight, having not started all tournament.
