U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

Also, has there ever been an international fixture at Ohio Stadium? I wouldn't want a game there now (only because of the field turf), but just thinking back to when The Shoe had real grass out there.

No. It was impossible. Too narrow for a legally-sized pitch.

If you remember, the Crew played at The Shoe in their early seasons. That was before the stadium renovation where they lowered the field and built inward toward the field to create the AA deck. The pitch was narrow (too narrow) even then - only 62 yards wide. For international matches, the Laws of the Game say the pitch has to be between 70 and 80 yards wide. It wouldn't have fit before the renovation, and definitely not after.

Makes perfect sense. Thanks

I was just thinking that in a situation like this, it would be quite a spectacle to see a sold out Ohio Stadium against Mexico. I have no doubt it would be a sellout, if they offered A deck tickets at 65 and trickled down a bit the higher/further away you got. Too bad it will never happen. :(

That's a shame because that place would be unbelievable with 80+ thousand fans...

This would be my 1st US game to attend. Only been to 1 Crew game too. I know, sad. :(

Still plenty of opportunities to see the Crew this season. However, US Men's International Fixtures do not come around VERY often! I missed out on my opportunity to see them last year against Jamaica, but remember watching on TV and being very proud of how loud the crowd was!

I'm regretting not going to the match in Tampa, and will not be making that mistake if they're within an hour or two drive.

Those are more likely cities to get future International Matches. There just isn't a HUGE amount of appeal when it comes to an 18,000 seat stadium. Sucks, but it's true. At least we have the whole "dos a cero" thing going for us.

Remember how quickly Ohio Stadium got cut from the 2022 bid? It was the second cut (I think) and there were 3 or 4. Sadly, I believe I recall ScUM's stadium making it further in the bid (but I refuse to look it up to confirm).

Getting nostalgic right now and remembering going to the Silverdome in Detroit in 1994 to watch USA-Switzerland. I can still smell the hot dogs.

Actually in Pontiac, which is a decent ways (driving wise) north of Detroit, but I've had my fair share of times spent there as well. It definitely had that unique smell to it, despite the sheer size of the place.

Just to show you how bad things had got in that area, it was was sold for a little under $600k back in '09. There hasn't been much, if any activity going on in that place since then & talk of putting an MLS team in there has been just rumors for a while, with nothing concrete. Pontiac isn't what I would call the most pleasant of places, so that might have something to do with it's demise.

Gus Johnson is on the call today. I just got even more excited, this should be quite entertaining if we continue the offensive performance of the last two matches.

I'm already annoyed by the commentary, but it's not his fault. Clearly the producer has told Johnson and Wynalda to direct all of their comments to casuals and non-fans since they're on network TV. That was clear to me with the forced explanation of the #6 position and the ref's whistle being delayed for an advantage call.
