U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

And almost had the PK but it was struck with too much power. Far as I can tell he hasn't made any bone head plays at all in this tournament even though he hasn't had to stand on his head much. I'll take it.

Well, that's the least surprising stat I have seen.

The fucked up part is, Sargent, while not the optimal target, was the one guy who would actually make purposeful movements to take defenders out of the middle, etc.

I think the obvious thing is, the roster is - and I don't really think it was all that intentional - constructed to play this way. But given Dest and Robinson's skill sets going forward and a guy like Adams that compliments them.... plus Weah.... plus the way they're deploying McKennie and Musah... I mean its built for that.

(But, you use Aronson and Gio at MF, and maybe its more of a quick passing in from the corner of the box kind of look, I don't know, but you're not going to confuse them with say, Croatia on the front the way they play now)

Unfortunately the route to finding a striker isn't an easy one, to paraphrase John Cooper, sometimes strikers don't always bite as pups. If we're looking for a bigger target dude, I mean Haji is 24 and really just started coming into his own now in Turkey of all places, Pefok was about the same age, Sargent is 22 and just now starting to get consistent in the Championship.... Pepi, Dike, Hoppe, Soto, Gioachinni I think are all 21 or younger (maybe the last 2 are a little older) so I think there's room to grow for at least some of them.

The trick is going to be more of who is a fit for the rest of the group... at some point, as the core attacking group progresses, you would hope it would make the strikers job easier

I think ideally they continue to evolve though, and maybe a target guy isn't what they need or ever really have. We saw a quick glimpse of Gio as a false 9 (so glimpsy in fact I was a little irritated that we didn't get to see more, just because I was curious), with Sargent in the game, Pulisic was the highest player on the field a lot of the time and Musah was doing some work keeping the width on the left. And we've seen them mess around with Pulisic in the trequartista role in the past, so, I think there's a recognition there that they need to be more direct sometimes... or maybe a lot of the time.
