U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

Well, I guess the soccer geeks can close the door on ever seeing the world cup in the united states.

Hardly. If anything or makes it more likely it'll happen. Either the entrenched politicians start making changes in the hopes of placating the developed footballing nations, or those nations may begin to break away in a manner similar to Power 5 autonomy in college football.

It's ridiculous that nations like Tanzania, Turks & Caicos and Fiji can exert just as much control over the game as England, Germany and Argentina. When the votes of those third world nations are so easily bought, you end up with an unbreakable voting bloc of Caribbean, African and Asian nations that is willing to sell the World Cup to BRIC and OPEC nations that stage these events by defrauding the people or committing human rights abuses.

This. The dirty secret is that FIFA money is divided equally amongst all participating nations regardless of population/TV ratings/ad revenue, so tiny island countries with a nationalized population of 5,000 which can't even field enough clubs for a national league see just as much payola as the United States or England. These nations don't participate for national pride, or with any illusions of ever even being competitive. They are FIFA members for money and no other reason. Their votes, which are also equal, are often "more valuable" than the share of the cash disbursement from FIFA's coffers.

I can't stop laughing at Scott Van pelt playing Sepp Blatter saying "I'm now the president of everybody" over-and-over on SVP's radio show.

Darth Vader took out the Emperor in "Return of the Jedi." I think Blatter's reign is longer than the Emperor's.

I'm proud that Gulati took a stand (to an extent).

I still hope the United States goes "All-Out Attack" at least once during the Women's World Cup and puts Leroux, Morgan and Wambach on the front line (or Wambach and two other strikers).

But that's probably not going to happen.

Still angry that FIFA wouldn't take Scotts Lawn's offer of free grass playing surfaces.

"Free" is a lousy bribe.

FIFA Frantically Announces 2015 Summer World Cup In United States
Global Soccer Tournament To Kick Off In America Later This Afternoon

ZURICH—After the Justice Department indicted numerous executives from world soccer’s governing body on charges of corruption and bribery, frantic and visibly nervous officials from FIFA held an impromptu press conference Wednesday to announce that the United States has been selected to host this summer’s 2015 World Cup. “We are thrilled to reveal that, for the first time in 21 years, the World Cup will finally return to America, with matches set to kick off today at 5 p.m. local time in Los Angeles,” said FIFA president Sepp Blatter, smiling broadly before unveiling the tournament’s official logo, a hand-drawn stick figure kicking a soccer ball with “USA 2015!” hastily scribbled in black marker above its head. “With world-class venues in cities across the country and a rapidly growing passion for the sport, the U.S. is the perfect choice—really the only choice—for this summer’s tournament. Everyone at FIFA is certain that the 2015 World Cup in America will be a tremendous success, and billions of fans from around the world will, in just a few hours, come together to enjoy this wonderful display of soccer over the coming weeks.” At press time, the U.S. national team was leading defending champions Germany in the World Cup’s opening match after being awarded 12 penalties in the game’s first three minutes.

:slappy:

Indicted former VP Jack Warner accuses the US of "double standard" in leading takedown of FIFA execs while simultaneously lobbying to hold the World Cup this year in the US.
