U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

I'm sure it was a gigantic bust-up, but any time I see there wasn't a player revolt (from execs) it tells me there was a player revolt (even if small).

They kind of need a changing of the guard in terms of the players prior to 2015 (just more of a mix of young and old).

U.S. to host 2016 Copa America - ESPNFC
For the first time, the 2016 Copa America will be held in the United States, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, the governing bodies of South and North America, announced on Thursday.
The 2016 edition, christened the Copa America Centenario, will mark the 100th anniversary of the tournament, as well as the founding of CONMEBOL. For those reasons, CONMEBOL decided an expanded competition was needed to mark the occasion. The tournament, set for June 3-26, 2016, will be the first time that the Copa has been held outside of South America.
In addition to the 10 members of CONMEBOL, six countries from CONCACAF will take part. The U.S. and Mexico are automatically invited, as will the 2014 Copa Centroamericana winner (also hosted in the U.S. this September), and the 2014 Caribbean Cup winner. The remaining two teams will come from the top four finishers from the 2015 Gold Cup that have yet to be invited, after a playoff involving those four sides.

I think this will be a great opportunity to see where we stand for '18. I wouldn't be surprised if Copa America did more of these type of cross-confederation tournaments in the future. I really believe it's vital for the USMNT to play in them perennially if we're to ever become a better team internationally. Although CONCACAF is getting better as a whole, we'll never be able to take that next step if we can't expand our horizon.

cross-posted from the World Cup thread:

The USA provisional squad:

GOALKEEPERS: Tim Howard (Everton), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

DEFENDERS: DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Timmy Chandler (Nürnberg), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Clarence Goodson (San Jose Earthquakes), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Michael Parkhurst (Columbus Crew), DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle Sounders FC)

MIDFIELDERS: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Maurice Edu (Philadelphia Union), Julian Green (Bayern Munich), Jermaine Jones (Besiktas), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

FORWARDS: Jozy Altidore (Sunderland), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

Seven more cuts to be made. Eddie Johnson already omitted. Not surprised about that though. I said when I saw him playing for DC United in the season opener against the Crew that being on that club would make it more difficult to get a ticket to Brazil.

Casual fan question....

Tim Howard is 35 and this appears to be his last World Cup....is Guzan the next up or are there some talented younger players who are on the verge?

Guzan would be the next up.

The next two after that, IMO, would be Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire) and Bill Hamid (DC United). I also wouldn't mind seeing Steve Clark's name being thrown out their as well (he's 28).
