Some of you must be wondering what's wrong with Lord Jeff - he's writing about Twitter handles! Well bear with me for a moment, there is some method to this apparent madness.
First, let's look at the Twitter handles of the 21 current signees for Ohio State's class of 2018:
* The symbol following Blue Smith's handle is a set of prayer beads
** Alex Williams Twitter account is locked, which must be a first for a recruit
Now I don't remember any of these recruits: (1) questioning/challenging a head coach's personnel decisions on Twitter; (2) posting a Twitter poll asking CFB fans which school he should attend; (3) begging for offers over Twitter; or (4) holding an hour-long Signing Day extravaganza broadcast over social media.
Now let's take a quick look at the four five-star recruits who either committed to Ohio State and then flipped, or were at one time near "locks" to Ohio State:
Notice any difference with this group? The self-aggrandizing handles ... the ALL CAPS screaming at you .... no reference to the actual person, just a puffed up Twitter personality. You think that there just might be some ego issues with this group?
Props to Emory Jones, who is simply Emory Jones on Twitter. Ultimately, he did not sign with Ohio State but he handled himself well throughout the process - no outrageous Tweets, no look-at-me voguing, no SHOCK THE WORLD IN ALL CAPS manifestos, no demands to respect MY decision. Things didn't work out with Ohio State, and both parties quietly moved on. Credit where credit is due.
Signing Day gives kids their fifteen minutes of fame. Now they have four years to earn some real lasting fame on the football field. God luck to them all.
