Game Thread Tulane @ Ohio State - 09/22/18, 3:30PM (BTN)

Unless I'm forgetting something, the last time we played a colorful ocean phenomenon, it turned out pretty well.

Pretty sure memes of Tulane smack at the ready is evidence @Nutriaitch hates Tulane as much as @ORD_Buckeye hates other Ohio state universities.

i only casually acknowledge their existence in football. they’ve been considerably worse than terrible pretty much my whole life, so never considered them even remotely relevant.

now in baseball....fuck those bastards

When we moved to South Florida, my wife talked me into buying tickets to a Reds-Marlins game. This area has basically 3rd world nation traffic, so going on a weekday is out of the question for me. I chose this coming Saturday evening, believing that there's no way that the Tulane game was going to be anything but a noon kick.

So I'll be catching this game on my phone (thank you, unlimited data plan) in a bar near the stadium while I wait to watch a clash of titans on the baseball diamond (in this case, "titans" is defined as the teams with the worst and 3rd worst records in the National League).

Tuf Borland In, Nick Bosa Out for Tulane Depth Chart | Quick Thoughts

The Ohio State football team will be missing defensive end Nick Bosa this week following a lower abdominal injury last Saturday against TCU.

On Monday, Urban Meyer announced that Bosa would miss the Tulane game, but would be evaluated this week to determine how long he might be out. He is still being evaluated and more will be known Wednesday or Thursday.

In his place this week on the depth chart is sophomore Chase Young, who will get his first career start as a Buckeye. Expect fourth-year junior Jashon Cornell to play quite a bit as well, just as he did against TCU.

With this being a lesser opponent, more will also be seen from freshmen Tyreke Smith and Tyler Friday. In fact, those two may play the entire second half as Larry Johnson won’t want to put too much strain on Young and Jonathon Cooper this week with Penn State coming up next week.

The other major change on the depth chart for the defense is redshirt sophomore Tuf Borland back as the starter at middle linebacker.

Borland was back in the starting lineup last week for the Buckeyes and now he is officially back on top of the depth chart.

Against TCU, Borland had a season-high five tackles. He may only play one half against Tulane, but this is a pretty good sign that he is about as close to 100% as many can get.

Following the game on Accost the Field, I said now would be the time to move Shaun Wade completely to safety and let him get a crack at strong safety against Tulane so that he’d be ready to go against Penn State.

While Wade has been moved to the safety room, Jordan Fuller told me that Wade is still only working as a nickel back. That may change moving forward, but as of Tuesday, it looks like Isaiah Pryor and Jahsen Wint opposite Fuller still.

While it’s not necessarily a change on the depth chart, freshman running back Brian Snead returned to practice on Tuesday after missing the TCU game for disciplinary reasons. Expect both he and fellow freshman Master Teague to get plenty of action this Saturday against Tulane.

There was concern about Mike Weber Saturday night prior to kickoff because he wasn’t initially warming up with the rest of the team. It caused speculation that he may not be healthy enough to play. He did play, however, and carried the ball 18 times for 64 yards.

Tuesday afternoon, Urban Meyer said on the Big Ten teleconference that there were no other major injuries other than Nick Bosa. He mentioned Robert Landers was probable, but that was it.

Following practice Tuesday evening, however, Weber was seen walking with a team doctor.

Statistical Projection: Ohio State vs. Tulane

Parris-Campbell-1170x780.jpg

Although I was close on the aforementioned topics, I was off on several others. My apologies for not predicting the seemingly obvious pick six by Dre’Mont Jones. Not sure if I’ll ever live down that oversight.

On offense, I was shy on our pass attempts, putting me under on the overall passing yardage as well.

My most egregious error, however, was using the phrase, “the trusty hands of Austin Mack lead the way.” Mack obtained a wicked case of the yips after dropping a sure touchdown and was unable to shake them until late in the contest. In my opinion, this was a one-time thing and we’ll see the Austin Mack who made two excellent catches on the first drive from here on out.

September 22 – Ohio State vs. Tulane
Game Summary
I rarely feel sorry for a football team. For instances in which I do pity a team, it’s nearly always because of an injury or tragic event that occurred to the school or the team itself.

In this case, however, I feel sorry for Tulane. It’s not their fault they’re the fourth game on the Buckeyes’ schedule. It’s not their fault that everything hit the fan and a domestic violence firestorm and media circus eventually resulted in a three-game suspension for Urban Meyer. And yet, they’ll be the ones sharing the field with Ohio State when Urban returns to the sideline this Saturday. They will be the team that has to deal with whatever Meyer has bottled up over the past month and a half. It may be cliche but there is blood in the water… and yet it’s the Green Waves themselves that are in trouble.

Tulane hasn’t yielded more than 31 points in a game this season, despite dropping two of three to mediocre opponents. That ends on Saturday and I’d bet my mortgage on it. The loss of Nick Bosa will impact the defense, to a degree, but not enough to concern me that Tulane will be able to score enough to stay competitive. In fact, I think that it allows others (Cooper, Smith, Cornell, etc.) to shine and get more valuable experience as the Bucks prepare to head into the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes roll in this one and there’s never a doubt. The first drive ends in a quick TD, as do many that follow. Godspeed, Tulane. It’s not your fault, but this one gets ugly.

Quarterback Projections
The Dwayne Train is rolling and looks incredibly difficult to stop. After just three games, he’s amassed 769 yards, 7 TD passes, completed 69% of his passes and is looking for his first rushing touchd… oh, no… I’m sorry. Those were Troy Smith’s numbers after his first three games in his Heisman winning season (2006). What I meant to say is that Haskins has thrown for 890 yards, 11 TD passes, completed 72.5% of his throws and rushed for a score as well.

As I noted above, and will reiterate throughout, this game will be a rough one for the Green Wave. Despite being a week before another big test in Happy Valley, Urban comes out firing with Haskins in this one, hiding nothing from the playbook. The Buckeyes raise their passing average a bit, firing for over 350 yards and 4 TDs. Martell also has a couple of successful runs as the OSU QBs put forth another dominating performance in a blowout win.

Zachery Harris (and the rest of the Tulane linebackers) will be responsible for stopping Dobbins, Weber

Urban Meyer said the Buckeye run game can improve. Expect the Tulane defense to be tested on the ground this weekend.

Over the first three games of the season, the Ohio State Buckeyes have showcased their ability to be a passing tour de force. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins has balled out, including a 344-yard breakthrough against the Bucks’ toughest opponent this year, TCU. But, with Urban Meyer back on the sidelines, we could see a change in the way OSU’s offense operates this weekend.

Meyer has already reiterated during this week’s coach’s press conference that he wants to see the running game improve. While production from J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber hasn’t been Heisman caliber, they do pack a punch against opposing defenses. Meyer wants to see that improve, and what better way to see improvement than to test it out in real, meaningful snaps.

Whether it be more run-pass option plays centered around Haskins and Dobbins/Weber, or straight up the middle rushing, the focus for the Tulane Green Wave will be to stop the Buckeyes’ running game. With Dobbins and Weber having the speed and power to break through the line of scrimmage, everything hinges on the linebacking play of Zachery Harris and Lawrence Graham.
