Urban Meyer: Why the Citrus Bowl means more to Alabama

Uncharted waters.

That's what Alabama is facing with a loss to Michigan in the upcoming Citrus Bowl according to FS1 college football analyst Urban Meyer.

The two-time national champion believes the Crimson Tide will play with a chip on their shoulder in Orlando in the face of disappointment given the stakes.

"I’m going with Alabama, because it just doesn’t look right when (you look at the rankings) and see Alabama at No. 13,” Meyer said during Saturday's FS1 preview show. “At Ohio State, for the seven years we were there, there we a couple times we got caught outside the top 10 and I’m telling you, you’re not sure the sun’s going to come up the next day in Columbus. In Tuscaloosa, this is uncharted waters.

"You lose this game and you finish No. 18 or something like that – they’ll be fine, they have a great recruiting class – but I can just imagine Nick Saban and that coaching staff. They have to win this game.”

The only program to appear in every College Football layoff since inception, Alabama's streak was snapped this season with the Crimson Tide's Iron Bowl loss to Auburn. Nick Saban is confident his team will show up motivated in the postseason, just like 2010 when a 9-3 Crimson Tide team stomped Michigan State at the same venue.

“We’re playing a very good team in Michigan, and I’m sure that they have their reasons for having the motivations to try and vindicate some of the things that happened during their season,” Saban said earlier this month. “And I also think that we have a lot of reasons, too, to sort of vindicate some of the disappointments that we’ve had during our season.

“I believe this team has had a lot to overcome, and it continues to grow with what they’ve had to overcome. We’re going to coach the guys that want to play in the game and have a great attitude about playing in the game, and that’s who we’re going to play in the game. And we’re going to do the best we can with all those guys.”

Alabama is a 7-point favorite over the Wolverines, who are also coming off a tough-to-stomach loss to their rival.

I have a feeling that Saban is out to make a statement, plus all these guys coming back will be playing their asses off to impress him for playing time next year. Whereas Harbaugh's group probably thinks the game is already won and are thinking up their next team t-shirt theme. My prediction is bitter disappointment.
