Recruit the living fuck out of Ohio and Western PA. How different might the 90s have been if Howard and Woodson had been Buckeyes? That they've pretty much given up on it is a losing proposition. Weaken your rivals while building your own program up.

If Luke stays at Cincinnati, Franklin stays at Penn St, and with the addition of Locksley and now Schiano on the east coast, they're gonna get suffocated out of what talent they could poach.

I'm touching myself thinking about it.

Since we have been talking about players and their recruiting ratings it is only fair to point out a few of OSUs surprise performers and their original ranking (there are all folks who were outside the top 300):

Borland - 324
Landers - 481
Alabi - 555
Arnett - 653
Harrison - 683
Berry - 728
Hamilton - 998

Jackson - unrated overall but the #170 OT.
(the #70 rated OT in 2020 is ranked as player #1000)

Last two years, Rutgers allowed 108 points and 1,173 yards to Ohio State. Michigan allowed 118 points and 1,144 yards to Ohio

For a little more perspective, in the best season of his career Patterson has thrown for 21 TDs in 12 games this season.

In the last two Michigan games OSU has scored 16 touchdowns.

OSU has scored at least one TD in each of the 8 quarters in those games and has scored 2 TDs in all but one.

This is right. As of right now no one is sitting out. And I agree this is a great building block for the future. You can finally see the offense moving in a good direction and better depth. Guys like McGrone and Hill are going to come in and replace JM and Hudson as leaders in there areas. Josh Ross will be back and healthy. Mazi Smith and Chris Hinton look good, especially Hinton and he’ll go into next season as a legit starter. Hutchinson is going to have a huge year. The linebackers and safeties will have a ton of speed. They need to find one corner for the OSU game.

The offense will take another step forward next year. Charbonnet will be finally fully healthy and Haskins will build on this season. Whoever plays QB will be more of a threat as a runner than Patterson ever was willing to be. I think most of the receivers come back. The only guy who I think is 50-50 right now is Nico Collins and I honestly think he comes back. I could definitely see one guy transferring because Mike S and Giles Jackson are going to get a lot more run next year. This offense is built for speed guys and next year you’ll see that a lot more with Mike, Giles, and Bell.

I know a lot of fans say Michigan is always saying next year, but that has never been my thing. I say that to say this, next year Michigan beats OSU at OSU. Michigan will be undefeated going into the Ohio State game. They’ll beat Washington, who is overrated, and it will be seen as a big opening win. Which will build the confidence of the team from the get go.

After that they get Ball State and Arkansas State to get ready for Wisconsin. Taylor will be gone and Jim remembers when other teams (excluding OSU) embarrasses Michigan and he’ll want to make an early season statement. Wisconsin looks to be an 9-4 team next year that takes a step back. After they get through Wisconsin and PSU back to back the schedule looks easily manageable. They’ll go into OSU undefeated with a legit chance to go to the playoffs. Next year will be Michigan’s best team of Harbaugh’s. Write it down. Seriously. Now if Michigan doesn’t end up top 5 next year then you’ve got to start considering what they do next.

2. Devote extensive resources to finding great young innovative coaching talent that can distinguish their brand and maybe pull off an upset or too with lesser talent to get the perception of the program headed in the right direction. Pay whatever it takes to keep them.
Bump.
Looking at their entire staff.

Harbaugh is Harbaugh, it’s been covered.

Don Brown (DC) has an extensive resume and is an adequate defensive coordinator. I think it’s pretty clearly established at this point that his basic schemes and gameplans are no match versus elite or even above average talent with a half decent game plan.

Josh Gattis (OC) is completely unproven as an offensive coordinator and appears to be a total disaster thus far. I can’t imagine Harbaugh not meddling and insisting on power ball plays constantly, especially in tight games, immediately fucking up any chance of implementing a more dynamic offense if Gattis was capable of that in the first place.

Anthony Campanile (LB) was coaching HS less than a decade ago, split time coaching offense and defense at Rutgers and Boston College, and last coached specifically LBs in HS. Is it worth having a position coach with next to no meaningful experience much less proven experience at the college level to pull a few NJ prospects?

Jay Harbaugh (RB/Special Teams) is nepotism personified and hasn’t held a meaningful job that wasn’t with his dad or uncle in his life. His bio write-up is humorously long and filled with meaningless garbage- like they know full well he has accomplished nothing and are overcompensating.

Ben McDaniels (QB) has only coached at one place for more than a single season twice in his career, each time for only two years, and has only had “quarterbacks” attached to his coaching responsibilities for two of those years prior to his current stop.

Sherrone Moore (TE) has a two year stint at Louisville and a four year stint at Central Michigan as the TEs coach before coming to Michigan in 2018. That’s.It.

Shaun Nua (DL) coached DL at Navy for six years and Arizona State for one year before coming to Michigan in 2019. That’s. It.

Chris Patridge’s (S/special teams) resume sucks so bad they don’t even list it out by year on the athletic website, but he’s been the special teams coordinator for four season at Michigan and was hired from his HS coaching gig for the sole purpose of landing Jabrill Peppers.

We’re all well aware of Ed Warinner’s (OL) backstory.

Michael Zordich (CB) has coached at Youngstown State for three seasons (in two sepeteate stints), the Eagles for four seasons, and has been with Michigan since 2016. That’s. It. Although he seems like he’s probably halfway decent at his job.

So... I think their coaching staff is really, really underwhelming and it’s not even up for debate. Do they complain about this? I feel like they should complain about this.

Their staff sucks and I imagine at least part of the problem is bright young minds don’t want to be under a coach on the autism spectrum.

The thing is, their program ceiling is simply lower than Ohio State's. They don't have the in-state talent base to build from and they've now been beaten down enough, and not just by Ohio State, that the magical national appeal that the winged helmet used to have is no longer there. If they want to turn things around, they have to hit their program ceiling AND prevent Ohio State from operating as close to its program ceiling as it has been lately. How can they do that?

1. Get a great athletic director.

2. Devote extensive resources to finding great young innovative coaching talent that can distinguish their brand and maybe pull off an upset or too with lesser talent to get the perception of the program headed in the right direction. Pay whatever it takes to keep them.

4. Invest heavily in facilities, training, nutrition, and mental culture. Recruit toughness rather than entitlement and develop talent. Find your own Coach Mick.

Fuck, Urban's been on national TV telling them exactly what it takes, but they're probably too arrogant to listen.
Can you imagine if Cooper had brought in Woodson, Howard, and Grbac...

Fully agreed. Looking at their current recruiting class and what is currently on the roster,I don’t see a QB striking Or an offensive skill player for that matter striking fear in OSU. Their defense is sheer mediocrity with Hill being their main stud in the secondary. Osu is bringing in talent that is only rivaled by Bama, Clemson, UGA and Oklahoma, that’s really it. ScUM is bringing in nothing but 3star decent DBs, and OSU is bringing in one of the best WR classes of all time in 2020, to go with Olave,Wilson and Williams.
And I won’t get started on the talent gap on our defense compared to their offense. LJsr and Mattison have to be salivating at the DL talent. And there was a time when people worried about LB talent, and now we have so much that it keeps guys like White off the field at the Bullet. Hafley has a bunch of young guys, and more talent coming for 2020. As long as the coaching staff doesn’t take their feet off of the pedal, this game won’t be close for a while, unless some unforeseen surprise loss a la an Iowa or Purdue and OSU gets too confident

I do think scUM's receivers (i.e. Bell. Collins, Jackson, and Peoples-Jones) are fairly decent; however, you need a QB that can consistently get the ball to them. Which scUM didn't have in the second half. Even as good as they might be they don't strike any fear in DBU. Shea Patterson was just inconsistent all year, including in THE GAME.

Coach Tim Drevno on Dylan McCaffrey
"Dylan is a really competitive guy. He's super smart, and I love the way he throws the ball. He has a quick release, which is always important for a quarterback. He also has great accuracy, another important trait, and he is going to do a great job operating this offense and getting his teammates in the right place. He comes with great pedigree, and we're excited to have him join our team at Michigan."

In the Words of...
• "Milton is everything Coach Harbaugh has ever wanted. Harbaugh loves alphas. He loves guys who aren't afraid to get into a fist fight. With Joe, he's going to go in, take the curriculum, break it down and immerse (Milton) in it. This is absolutely, 100 percent Harbaugh's type of kid. It's a perfect match." - Steve Clarkson

Just sayin': If you can believe their bios (on scUM's website) they might have been better off playing McCaffery or Milton....
