ttun Shenanigans and Arguments (2018 thread)

Upon further reflection, Braylon Edwards was part of the recruiting class of 2001, which means he wasn't ranked by Rivals and doesn't even count in this discussion (recruits from 2002 to the present).

So, the revised final tallies are:

All Americans: Ohio State 14, scUM 1
Major Award winners: Ohio State 6, scUM 1
Big Ten POY Awards: Ohio State 4, scUM 0
First round draft picks: Ohio State 8, scUM 0
Record on the field: Ohio State 14, scUM 2
I think we may have inadvertently stumbled upon the reason scUM is now going the 3 star haven route.... with enough 3 stars and enough time, they might, and I emphasize might.. one day match Ohio State's totals... I mean, if Ohio State only takes 2 3 stars a year, and scUM takes 17 or whatever the fuck, eventually, their gonna catch us, right?

MGoBlow's list would be like us citing Jay Richardson, T.J. Downing, Austin Spitler, Dexter Larimore, Dane Sanzenbacher, Kenny Guiton, Reid Fragel, Darryl Baldwin, J.T. Moore, Evan Spencer, and Tracy Sprinkle as evidence of "three-star win!!!!!"
To be fair, I'd chalk Sanz (124 catches, 1800+ yds and 19 td) and arguably Kenny G (admittedly small sample size, but looked like a good fit in Tom Herman's offense) as "wins."

And I mean Evan Spencer completely owned Alabama's Linebackers on Zeke's run through the heart of the South....

They were pretty good players, definitely "wins" compared to the average three-star guy ... but not compared to all-time greats like Hawk, Laurinaitis, Jenkins, Roby, Hooker, etc.

The main point is this: Ohio State has turned several three-star recruits into all-time greats, while Michigan is lucky to turn three-star recruits into pretty good players. And's that's a big part of difference between the two programs over the past 16 years. Add in the disparity at the top of the recruiting rankings, and that's why Ohio State has owned Michigan since 2002.

All that “talent” and then Harbaugh eventually departs? Sounds like success!

I’ve never seen a more “successful” coach with nowhere to go. His act wore thin in the pros to where he wasn’t wanted after going to a Super Bowl. He goes back to his alma mater, a storied major college program and can’t do shit. He won’t last much longer there. Where can this guy land where he can actually do something? High School? AAF? CFL?

I'm honestly surprised the harbrau hasn't been able to recruit better. I never thought he'd clean up like the DFBIA expected, but the guy is recruiting at an Iowa-level.

Which I guess eliminates high school as an option for him. His “schtick,” if it can even be called one instead of just calling it his “norm,” doesn’t seem to be resonating with 17-18 year old kids. It wore thin with grown men in the locker room and FO in SF. It isn’t drawing high schoolers to Michigan so the lack of success coupled with just being Jim, has to be wearing thin in Ann Arbor. There just doesn’t seem to be a place that he can ever settle in and call home. A place where it actually works for all parties and something is actually accomplished.

Not sure I completely agree with you....

according to Rivals...

ttun team recruiting rankings compared to tOSU's....

2002: 16th -- 5th
2003: 17th -- 41st
2004: 5th -- 9th
2005: 6th -- 12th
2006: 13th -- 12th
2007: 12th -- 15th
2008: 10th -- 4th
2009: 8th -- 3rd
2010: 20th -- 25th
2011: 21st -- 11th
2012: 7th -- 4th
2013: 5th -- 2nd
2014: 31st -- 3rd
2015: 49th -- 9th
2016: 4th -- 3rd
2017: 4th -- 2nd
2018: 24th -- 2nd
2019: 18th -- 13th (currently)

Harbrau was hired right at the end of 2014, like 6 weeks before signing day, so I'll give him a pass for the 2015 class. The next two seasons, he finished with 4th-ranked classes - hard to top those numbers (but Urban did). Last year's 24th ranked class was initially dismissed as an anomaly...an off year..... but now the three star deluge is starting to look more and more like a real trend, and that will probably be a real problem moving forward. Shawn L Martin sees it coming.....

He's had talent there, but hasn't developed it effectively enough to win - especially in big games.

Incidentally, the biggest hole on Jimbo's ttun teams has been the glaring lack of a competent QB. Since Jimmuh took over, he's recruited the following qbs:

2015: Zach Gentry (4*) & Alex Malzone (4*)
2016: Brandon Peters (4*)
2017: Dylan McCaffrey (4*)
2018: Joe Milton (4*)
2019: Cade McNamara (4*)

Sugar Shane (2013 - 4*) and Wilton Speight (2014 - 3*) were both Hoke recruits and already on campus when Jimmuh arrived.

And people seriously think he's some sort of QB whisperer.......

Aren’t scUM’s rankings skewed/inflated by sheer volume of kids taken in those classes? I seem to recall the average star rank between the two schools is more indicative of the actual gap.
