ttun Shenanigans and Arguments (2015 official thread)

You forgot about the hand written letter from their incredibly unqualified TE coach. Looked like it was written by a 3rd grader.

Is this maybe why most organizations have nepotism policies in place?

...maybe, there's a reason that organizations have rules/laws regarding nepotism. So you don't have moronic coach's kids writing love letters to a guy who's making what is probably the biggest decision of his life. The candidate has to be thinking WTF? I'm going to work my butt off and play football for this ameboa brained pickle dick? What a snappy, professional presentation.

BTW this letter was shown on the Detroit CBS affiliate.

Maybe the most underrated best line in all of movie history. Still remember the time my kid brother said "sumbitch" in front of family the first time, he was three I think.

hell, that's how my grandpa talked

I heard sumbitch as a kid a million times if I heard it once

still find myself saying it to this day

From what i've heard 1. he wasn't kicked out of the house. In fact the kid walked out with Mattison and he left feeling that we had a pretty good shot with the kid. 2. Mattison simply was making a pitch on how hard it is to get in and how great an opportunity he has. Apparently he threw out some test scores and G.P.A. of what some kids get turned down have, trying to show how hard it is to get into the university and how good the degree is. And telling him he could have all this for free.

It's probably somewhere in between, there's a reason Nebraska is the only conference member not in the AAU... but the tact was apparently way off.
Once again UM arrogance reels its ugly head. You guys and ND should be in a conference with Texas and Penn State.

Jay Harbrau's hand written note to Chris Clark...

Holy fucking douche chill. He spelled Adidas wrong.

So they're still living in the past.

Clark should've been the easiest one to bring back into the fold (and maybe the only one left now)... it's not like UCLA is a homerun either. But with a clearly unqualified coach... that decision became a lot harder.

I'm not trying to disparage the kid or his family and I certainly don't like defending tsun. That being said, I have a hard time believing a damn good recruiter like Mattison went into the home of a kid he's trying to land, and implied, inferred, suggested, or flat out called the kid anything but someone he really wanted to be a part of their class. I mean c'mon. If this same story was floating around about Coombs, we would be saying how ridiculous it is. Michigan may be arrogant, but Mattison isn't stupid. I get wanting to pile on and have some laughs at TSUN's expense, but it's ridiculous to think it went down like some are saying.

I think the father's story is pretty clear - Mattison was going on about UM's academics and the father took it a very different way. He chose his words poorly...
Given this is also something Harbaugh has tried to push at Stanford and when he previously bad-mouthed Michigan.... it doesn't surprise me that he would've told his assistants to sell that angle or talked it up before Mattison arrived. Again the father stated he was thinking in a very similar vein (UM academics uber alles), suggesting somebody had already planted and/or nurtured that seed.

If you're going to try selling somebody on how this is a great opportunity b/c they otherwise wouldn't have access to elite academics... I think it's a valid point. But you better have some tact when saying it.

While there aren't more reports of Harbaugh recruiters getting kicked out of homes, it certainly doesn't look like they're rubbing people the right way. If an Ohio State assistant was striking out on kids choosing the likes of Syracuse and Kentucky while getting kicked out of homes... I'd sure hope there'd be some criticism instead of mindless wagon circling and excuse making.

There wouldn't be much criticism. A year and a half ago, we all were absolutely certain there wasn't a single PSU coach that didn't know about what ol' Jer was up to in the locker room showers. How could they not? It was said that it was a joke amongst the assistant coaches that you don't leave your kids alone with Sandusky. Har har har. It made sense why none of the coaches that had recruited and developed plenty of NFL talent couldn't land a job outside of Happy Valley.
Then we hired LJ Sr and he didn't know anything and he's one hell of a DL coach and a fine man that makes his players better at football and as people.

I know BIGBLUEHART irl. He has solid sources and he's not the type to spin shit, especially with me.

I don't think he is spinning shit... that's why I said it's probably somewhere in between. Mattison was probably trying to make a legit point about UM vs. UN academics, but instead he came off as an arrogant prick. Perceptions aren't facts... but when you're trying to sell something they're everything. If you're going to broach a topic like that, you need to have some tact and diplomacy.

I'm not really going to touch the LJSR thing because I'm not sure what I think about it myself, and it's also a very different issue. There we're talking about a coach' character, whereas I was talking about performance wrt recruiting. I think performance is pretty cut and dry by comparison to doubts about character. We'll unfortunately never know how much any of them knew or didn't know... and that disturbs me. At least Paterno and McQueary knew for sure, but beyond that? I think some people still doubt his character, but what proof is there? They were largely shouted down at the time. There's no doubt regarding LJSR on the performance side... which makes it better or worse depending on your perspective.

what approach has he taken? What do you like about it specifically?

Hoke came in hit ohio hard selling the "they don't want you come to michigan." Also with his first class he seemed like he was just taken bodies. Harbaugh has thrown out quite a few offers. But they aren't all over the place they are at positions of high need. Stars hasn't really mattered he's been consistent on the type of players that he has offered. He isn't just going out and trying to get kids that he thinks will commit. Rather he is going after kids that he wants. I don't expect him to flip every kid never did. I thought this class was pretty much gonna be done with the amount of time that he had. But I have a much different outlook on this class. From what I have heard this class is gonna end up pretty nice. And we may end up with a surprise or 2. Also hear that we will probably be taking a graduate transfer in the secondary. We shall see!
