With that being said, Tressell would most likely not be as effective in todays game as he wasn't known for recruiting speed.

Tressel recruited plenty of skill players who had plenty of speed. Check the NFL drafts.

He wouldn't be as effective in today's game because Marty/Tressel ball is an outdated strategy.

Tressel’s strength and conditioning coach summed it up pretty well.

Ohio State was stacked at skill positions, and could find gems in Ohio....including the Teddy Ginn’s, Beanie Wells, Anthony Gonzalez’s of the world. And then you sprinkle in that Florida recruit here and there like a Santonio Holmes and you have an elite set of skill players even relying on Ohio kids.

The problem was on the offensive and defensive lines where he said they immediately lost on the “first to get off bus challenge”. Tressel loved Ohio offensive and defensive lineman. Eric Lichter thought this put them in bad shape nationally.

He said there was a noticeable difference in the trenches in terms of size and speed. He didn’t think they recruited those position groups well and relied far too heavily on local kids with solid High School pedigrees but limited upside.

He admired Urban Meyers ability from afar, to identify weaknesses in the roster and recruit the crap out of areas that needed an overhaul.

And I love Tressel. Just two different approaches IMO.

And one thing u really have to give Meyer credit for is his ability to instill the importance of the Rivalry, on kids from out of state.

Michigan’s roster still doesn’t get it.....Ohio State’s does......and looking at the makeup of each roster, the “get the rivalry factor” really shouldn’t be as wide as it is. Both teams are loaded with out of state players.

Michigan sings a 3* LB; #40ILB and #998 (Top 1000!) overall, and Michigan Man justifies it because it's all part of Harbaugh and Dudeck playing three dimensional chess to get some kid from the same high school for the following year's class.

It's a well-known fact that wolverines eat their young. Your post makes the case.

Something in Ann Arbor isn’t working and I wonder if this strategy is a designed shift away from what has not been working.

I’m not saying it will work, but I feel like we could be seeing a shift in strategy rather than a weird “throw darts at a board” scenario.

I’ll leave it at that......they may be identifying a “certain” type of player they have passed on in recent history.

To me it reminds me of those relationships you see were instead of trying people settle because it's at least something.

I really can't describe how bad it has to suck to be a fan of theirs and seeing what we are stacking in recruiting. You can't trot out a bunch of 5s to play 10s and that's were this is headed.

BTW.... Tressell did wonders with 3 stars. Beat more talented Meatchicken fans.
Okay, A.J Hawk, James Laurinaitis, Malcolm Jenkins, Bradley Roby....

But let's not forget Sian Cotton, Tommy Brown, Antonio Underwood, Brandon Maupion, Sirjo Welch, Marcel Frost, Alex Barrow, Adam Homan, Nick Patterson, Shawntel Rowell, Rocco Pentello, Sam Longo, Nic DiLillo, Zach Domicone, Aram Olson and a couple dozen other 3-star guys who never did anything.

No coach can consistently "do wonders" with 3-star players. That's why Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Oklahoma, etc. don't recruit a whole lot of them.

Not super highly rated so far. Same school as 2021 OG target Drew Kendall.
Kendall is ranked the #118 player in the country. Three old CBs to Boston College. Root hard for Hafley to close this one.
DFBIA said:
Gotta help in securing Drew's commitment. But, does he take Kobe King slot?
Kobe King is a 3-star LB (#13 Michigan, #452 national) from former Michigan stronghold Cass Tech. Four CBs to Penn State.

So Harbaugh has to go to Boston to get some low 3-star LB because he can't get a high 3-star LB from Detroit. Something very wrong in AA.

BTW, Kobe's twin brother Kalen is a 4-star CB (#10 Michigan, #328 national) from Cass Tech. He also has four CBs to Penn State.

DFBIA getting restless. There following quotes are from the MGoBlog thread linked above. If it contains bashing of recruits, it is DFBIA bashing their own:
Well, either Michigan knows information that literally no other major power 5 program knows about these New England recruits, or these are just two bad commitments taken. Time will tell.
Not gonna lie, having played football in Massachusetts, I hate the Northeast recruiting focus. Football there is simply not the same as the South and Midwest.
He has offers from Army, Georgetown, umass, princeton, penn, and yale. How are we going to beat ohio state with someone with that offer list? Losing Partridge and Campanile and not replacing them is going to hurt.
When you have a 5 star QB to headline your class and one that committed early, the class should be in a different trajectory right now. [ED: Compare with Ohio State, which also had an early commitment from a 5-star QB. Notice a difference?]
With that said, it feels like we’re becoming another BC type program, rather than a legit top tier’ish program. If that’s how it’s going to be, I’ll still be a fan, but I’m going to recalibrate my expectations.
This is the second commit in this class that even insiders have been like "idk who this is"....
Yes, trust the coaches who brought us from suck to mediocrity. The new standard at Michigan.
No one understands Michigan's recruiting strategy. Things just happen. [ED: BPRT's HotMic: "I really don’t understand their recruiting method this cycle."]
It feels like the coaches don’t want to venture out of their comfort zone much anymore for recruits.

So what's the new strategy in your opinion? (Not being snarky)

If they are moving to a certain "type" then the WASPy 3 star from a New England prep school strategy is one that seems, well let's just say, sub-optimal*?

*If one's intent is to compete at the top of P5 football. If they have run up the French Tri-color of surrender and bought into their own propaganda about being an Ivy (safety) school then, sure. Makes total sense.

Bottom line to me is no matter what mitigation strategy they adopt, their fundamental issue is having college football's version of Joe Exotic as a head coach in a business that is all about comfort and relationships. Sure, technically he can form a few relationships but come on, how nice of a zoo does anyone really think it's going to be?
