TSUN -10.5 at Ind (ov/un 65.5) 3:30 ET ESPNU

Lynch made a mistake when he called his first timeout of the second half, with 1:20 left in the game. He had a 4th and 5, with the clock running. He should have let the play clock go down to 1 or 2 seconds, taking half the time off the clock, and called timeout with about 40 seconds left.

They had a 4th and 5 on the 19 yard line. If they pick it up, they've got at worst case a temporary clock stoppage with 35 seconds left, and a first down inside the 14 yard line with 2 timeouts left. That's enough time to run 5 plays easily, since at least 4 of them are going to be pass plays. If they didn't get the first down, 2 timeouts and 1:15 left would at best case get TSUN punting with about 20 seconds left, with Indiana needing a TD.

If TSUN would have had 30 seconds or fewer after getting the kickoff, it probably would have gone to OT. Lynch's calling the timeout right away on 4th down was a bad move. The increased likelihood of TSUN getting a game-winning score with 40 more seconds is more than Indiana being able to get a tying score if they failed on the 4th down, but kept that extra 40 seconds.

Basically I agree with you; however I make a distinction between hurting (i.e. inflecting plain) and injuring someone. Football is a full contact sport and you want to hit the opposing player (legally) as hard as you can to inflict as much pain as you can. When Ohio State plays Michigan I would like to see every contact an Ohio State player with a Michigan player a candidate for the "Jack Tatum hit of the week award".

:osu:

And, just what did Jack Tatum do to TSUN quarterbacks? Ask Dennis Brown about his quick exit from The Game in 1968. I think Brown probably has recovered most of his functionality by now. :slappy:

Excellent observation. I'll add that Lynch almost shot himself in the foot with respect to clock management at the end of the first half too. A running play was stopped short of the goal line with 14 seconds to go. Instead of calling a timeout immediately, he waited until there was only 9 seconds to go to call timeout. They ran another play, and with 4 seconds to go, they were forced to decide between going for a TD and a FG, even though it was only 3rd down. Now, it all worked out because UM has a [censored] poor secondary, but if that pass fell incomplete, the half would have been over; and had he called timeout with 14 seconds to go under such a scenario, he likely still would have had time to kick the FG on 4th down.

Quite true - I didn't mention it since that was pointed out earlier in the thread, and he got lucky by scoring the TD as time ran out.

Why several Indiana players weren't signaling for a timeout when a guy's tackled in-bounds on 1st down with 14 seconds left is a mystery to me. Everybody in the stadium knows you've got to stop the clock ASAP in that situation. Maybe the coach only wants the QB to be calling timeouts on the field, but why didn't Chappell signal it immediately?

They actually had all 3 timeouts left at that point - so there's no way in hell that you want to wait in that situation.

One timeout after 1st down if we need it, one after 2nd down, and still 1 left for after 3rd down ... :tongue2:

Give me odds on that please? That Indiana will put up 35 points on the Ohio State defense. That they will have 35 FREAKING FIRST DOWNS against the Ohio State defense. Really!

the odds are slim, but the chances usually skyrocket when someone spouts off with a silly quote. the whole karma thing and whatnot.

Ah, so message boards now have bearing on the outcome of games? Better hope not for your skunkbear's sake, Mike.

holy smokes. i thought that there was no way that scum gave up 35 first downs to indiana. i thought that you were just exaggerating for effect. so, i checked the game's box score.

35 first downs? that is the most pathetic stat i think i've ever come across. :slappy:

Imagine if Indiana had a whisp of defensive ability...

Here was my quote that you apparently take issue with:

"a close game with IU for the second year in a row (insert laughter here)."

Serious question--just what do you find "silly" about that? Are you disputing that UM's games with Indiana were close this year and last? Or do you find it "silly" that I'm laughing at UM for having a tough time with Indiana last year, you know, that powerhouse football program that went a whopping 1-7 in conference?
