Troy Smith Saga has begun.....

I'm glad to see that people are starting to back off Troy, and especially glad to see that Tressel wasn't too upset with Troy after their conversation. He's a good QB and he wants to become a better QB and wants to be the starter. There's not much more to take from his interview. You can also see from the original O-zone article that Troy was definately very concerned about trying not to leave a me-first impression while still being totally honest about his position. I respect that.

Fourth- I think the lack of communication probably stems from the reasons that Troy is Practicing at WR, and not why he's not the QB... He probably wondering if he's still #2... or whatever.

Exactly ... Tressel handled the situation perfectly in the pre-season AND during the games. It doesn't help zwick AT ALL to yank him if he's making mistakes (side note: those that think that zwick has played well need to look at the interceptions, the fumbles, and the disturbing amount of throws that reminded me of Krenzel.) Either way though, zwick is young and learning and he won't be making those bad plays for long if he gets the experience under his belt to deal with it.

The only problem was that apparantly, smith practiced at WR without, in his mind, enough of an explanation. But you can't say for a second that Tressel doesn't understand where troy's coming from or that he won't learn from this and become a better coach because of it ... nor can you say that Troy won't learn from this and know not to talk to the press after he's had a frustrating day.

SD I have 1 question for you. Do you think that if Smith had gone out and led the team on TD drives and looked good throwing the ball his first series against Cinci and Marshall that he wouldn't have earned more playing time?

I don't know what more evidence you want to show that the QB battle was clearly Zwick's to lose, and only injury or terrible play would have given TS a chance in the games.
evidence? you show no evidence. just what you interpret Tressel to mean.

he said the job was open....which means it isnt 100% decided yet. 80% JZ and 20% TS is still open.

dont cry on here because you interpret things differently than others.

I'm not taking the bait. No reasonable, objective viewer would say he played "very well". He played well enough, but like I said, he's got a lot to learn. I'm excited about his potential, but I'm not going to say he's close to reaching it yet. If that is interpreted as an "attack" and not an honest observation, well, I can only say the standards are set too high.
ummm. im reasonable and objective.....and i was very impressed with him. im sorry he didnt throw for 1000 yards for you. :roll2:

If it's fair game to attack Smith's words to the press, it should be fair game to criticize Tressel's - especially since one is a redshirt college sophomore, and the other has a D-1 National Championship as a head coach.

Precisely what Tressel Words are we attacking today?

This is my problem... I want to see the words that you think were wrong.

"Well, it is up for grabs," Tressel said.

There is your quote from Tressel the week of the Cincy game when Zwick was named the starter.

BuckeyeNation, I believe I gave my proof that the job wasn't open. Look back a few posts, because I don't feel the need to repost it.

What's my point? This thread started because of what Smith said the other day. A few people criticized his comments, and I'm am defending the comments - because I believe this situation could have been avoided had JT been more clear from the beginning. No one agrees with me and that is fine. I realize I'm trying to argue with "JT can do no wrong" Buckeye fans. But, that's what fans are supposed to do I guess. Support the coach no matter what. I don't see it that way, but my point has been made, and have realized the unpopularity and repetitiveness of my posts, I'll leave the issue be.

stadium must be a female.....i mean only a woman obsesses this much about communicating and one misspoken sentence.....that happened months ago.................
I would be upset DiHard, but at least you didn't cuss me out, so I'll take the comments as a positive.

Hmmm- Here's the rundown of the 'nati pregame Pressconference...

QB story reads like mystery
Plot will thicken for Buckeyes when Zwick, Smith get chance to make their cases on field

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State’s quarterback situation today seems confusing, like entering into a timeshare arrangement with no written lease. Nobody seems to know who’s going to play how much or when, beyond this: Justin Zwick will start for the No. 9 Buckeyes in their season opener against Cincinnati. And coach Jim Tressel has promised that Troy Smith also will play.
Smith said he had no idea what to expect.

"No, I’m just as clueless as you guys," he said to reporters.

That’s by design, Tressel said. The coaches will go into the game with a plan on how to divide up the snaps, but will be fluid depending on performance and situations.

"Justin Zwick is our starting quarterback. Troy Smith is going to play. That’s just the way it’s going to be," Tressel said. "And how much, what percent, what series, I don’t know. I have no idea. But I’ll promise you this, they’re both going to play and they’re both going to have opportunities."

Tressel then stressed that he would not necessarily wait for Zwick to struggle to insert Smith, nor would he let Smith languish on the sideline all day, even if Zwick got hot.

Because Zwick is a better drop-back passer and Smith a more accomplished scrambler, the question arose of whether the offense has to be tailored around who is in the game.

Quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels said that won’t be the case.

"It’s going to be emphasis — what do we emphasize with Troy, what do we emphasize with Justin," Daniels said. "The worst situation to be in with two quarterbacks fighting for a job is if they had different abilities in a sense of offenses, where you need a different offense.

"I think that’s a real problem, because to incorporate two different styles of offense is tough — you only have so many snaps in practice.

"We don’t have that problem, it’s just strictly an emphasis thing, which is a great help."

The other issue is one of leadership. Offenses naturally look to the starting quarterback for guidance. As a longtime quarterback guru, Tressel is aware of this. At the Big Ten meetings in early August, Tressel said he didn’t think alternating between two quarterbacks all season was a good idea.

"I don’t know where I’ve had a situation where I felt like I had to play them both," he said. "Maybe I’ve wanted to because of certain things that a guy does and he can be the role player, but this guy is probably going to carry the bulk of your quarterback duty, which I think would lend more to having that leadership."

Last week, though, Tressel said he didn’t think having one quarterback emerge as the team leader was paramount — at least at this early point.

"Scott McMullen was a pretty good leader in that Penn State game (last season)," Tressel said. "He wasn’t the starting quarterback, but he led us to a victory. I don’t know that that’s issue one. Issue one is doing the things that we need so we have a chance to win."

Obviously, Zwick and Smith would prefer to be the clear-cut No. 1 and accept the mantle of leadership.

"It’s tough sharing reps and always being the guy and (then) not being the guy," Zwick said. "But it’s just something you get used to, and it’s something that we have to go through."

Smith has kept a stiff upper lip throughout preseason, for the most part playing the role of good soldier and saying all the right things.

"When my opportunity comes, hopefully I’ll seize the moment and do all the things necessary to help the team win," he said.

But it’s clear Smith is a bit skeptical about the arrangement. Should Zwick play well, it’s hard to imagine the timesharing will continue in anything close to an equitable fashion past today.

"When the chance comes — if I get a chance — I’ll be ready," Smith said.

Well, I'd like to know how many people you guys think are critisizing Troy or his comments. I just reread this whole thread. There are about 3 posts (out of 190) that took the opinion that MAYBE Troy should go ahead and leave IF that's the way he felt. The OVERWHELMING number of responses said that they understood Troy's feeling BUT didn't like him airing them in public. I see NO ONE attacking Troy Smith personally. Most are supporting of him even if he chooses to leave! I guess you can interpret those anyway you like, but I think you're both reading TOO much into these posts. Just as you're trying to read too much into Tressel's comment.

Here's the long and short. Did Tressel mislead Troy. Possibly, but I (and most other posters) think not intentionally. Troy obviously thinks that is the case ... or had a bad day. Should Troy air his concerns to the media or talk to the coaching staff?

SD, I just checked and you just got "dinged" by ONE member. That's it. Obviously they had enough rep clout to knock you down a bit, but a positive response will bring you back up much more than you lost.

So, let's not get too upset. One person disagreed with you. It doesn't have to be about respectful or disrespectful.

I would submit that folks now think you are now arguing symantics. You have already admitted that your views are similar to most in that TS will be a good QB and probably should be starting. IMHO the topic is not worth arguing on symantics. We should probably just move on.

EDIT: I see that in the time I took to post, someone also propped your rep points back up. As stated before, relax a bit. If you want to have a discussion the folks here are open minded and reasonable. The sky isn't falling over one negative ding.

If he gets back to gray now... its his own fault. :)
