In my LONG lifetime I am not aware of any hurricane STARTING in west Gulf of Mexico.. let alone one that will be ultra catastrophic being that the same area is still soaked from before... and most repairs not done... this will be biblical destruction... Helene was the Johnstown's flood on steroids...

They form in the bay of Campeche quite frequently but typically the farthest east they got is NO, usually. Helene and Milton are just unreal in terms of where they formed, direction they traveled, and the absolutely exponential curve their intensity that is nightmare fuel.

This storm may bring about the end of Florida as we know it.

Insurance rates are already outrageous. Many of the folks flooded from Helene are just finding out that they are not even covered.

The boomers who have retired to the state are the beneficiaries of generous retirement plans and a booming stock market. But those resources are not unlimited.

I have wintered on the East coast for the past 18 years. The ocean wants to recapture the beaches that are now filled with high rise condos. Endless seawalls are a stop gap and groups are fighting to preserve the wildlife habitats sea walls destroy. Many owners are just waking up to the reality that there are better ways to invest their money. (I am aware of one owner who dropped their asking prices from $790,000 to $640,000 in just a few months before unloading.)

Florida will always have its attraction - but a prudent person will give purchasing a great deal of thought.

We watched the start of the national news last night. I guess I did not put together how much junk was still sitting on the curbs after their most recent storm. And by "junk" I am referring to stuff homeowners put out that had been destroyed just a few weeks prior, like furniture and appliances. All that stuff may just become projectiles with Milton.

We've been looking at the Carolina coast for a future move. After some storms (mostly rainfall) this year we are thinking inland may not be so bad.

Great lakes beachfront. Florida isn't going to disappear into the ocean in the foreseeable future, but it will at some point. I read "The Deluge" a couple of years ago and it's really disturbing how much of it is coming true.

The dunes are gone... the water surge has unabated pathway... Roofs heavily damaged by Helene are not repaired.. they're still using heavy rigs just to get the immense sand away so they can get some access... This is going to be horrific.. Will any vaca home anywhere near Tampa ever have a pool again? Won't be able to get insurance regardless of usurious rates

Just saw cameras at Anna Maria island near Tampa... there is no beach.. water is already at the house lines without dunes... and it's already angry
Anna Maria may have been my greatest vacation spot.. went for waterfront that was amazing... I suspect it made it thru because it was built higher than normal.. but the stunning house next to us had a fabulous wrap around pool.. zero doubt, massive damage.. These houses were valued at $5-7 million... probably cost more to fix than tear down and rebuild... sad
