Sticking with riddles...

You whiz around the corner in your rented moped when suddenly you're forced to come to a sudden stop.
It seems a funeral procession has stopped for a quick breather. Empathy overwhelms you and you offer your condolences to the whimpering man nearby. "Were you close?" you ask, wishing you hadn't.
After a moment, the man replies, "Brothers and sisters I have none, that man's father is my father's son."
That sounds sarcastic, you think to yourself. Maybe the guy doesn't want to tell you, which is fine, but there's no reason to be a smartass about it.
Or, perhaps the clever among can see this is the real answer.

How is this possible?

Ok - one last puzzle for the day. Major props to anyone who solves this. I was beaten to the solution by a friend of mine the first time I saw it, so, sadly, I'll never know if I would have gotten it.

Puzzle.JPG

Sorry for the crappy scan. I had to draw it, and I chose a poor writing utensil (mmm...sharpie fumes...)

The numbers across the top are 5, 23 and 9, and the numbers across the bottom are 20, 14, 20, 15, 19 and 24. The numbers inside the triangles are 10, 2 and ?. What does the ? represent?

I thought it was because 'S' plus nine (IX) = SIX

i'm nearly certain that that is not the correct path to the 6. for one, how does such a path work for 10 and 2? two, how do you decide that 's' must be added to nine (ix)? why not add 'x' to get xix?

bkb: "(For a hint on my reasoning, if I'm right (Peach can confirm) it's because 5 + 1 is six)"

how do you get 5 + 1? where do 5 and 1 originate? isn't 3 + 3 also 6?

---

my solution -- and i'm nearly 100% that i have the correct path -- has to do with the alphabet.

6 is the answer, though Buckguy is correct that your reasoning is wrong.

Buckguy, did you just solve this now, or had you seen this before? I'm curious if anyone else can figure out why the answer is 6, so don't give it away just yet... (I was kinda pissed when someone showed me the solution before I had a chance to solve it.)

oops... i just sent a message to bkb, explaining my rationale. i won't send one to bb73, nor will i post my solution.

no, i've never seen this one before; however, i absolutely love logic problems. i'm kind of nerdy that way. i love logic problems and i absolutely get all geeked out learning new words. i have a $10 bet at the place where i work: i'll give $10 to any person who gives me a word of which i don't know the definition. i have yet to pay. some of the words they've almost gotten me on (but didn't): meretricious, borborygmus, sesquipedaliaphobia, funambulist, and iatrogenic... among others.
