According to Rivals:

Malcolm Jenkins was a 3 star recruit (1st CB taken in the draft)
James Laurinaitis was a 3 star recruit (lead the Rams in tackles as a rookie)
Santonio Holmes was a 3 star recruit (1st rd draft pick and Superbowl MVP)
A.J. Hawk was a 3 star recruit (won the Lombardi Award at tOSU and lead the Packers in tackles with 119 as a rookie)

According to Scout:

Nick Mangold was a 1 star recruit (1st rd pick for the Jets and only gave up 1/2 sack and had 3 penalties on the season as a rookie)
Vernon Gholston was a 3 star recruit (the Buckeyes all-time leader in sacks and top 10 draft pick)

Ginn & Gonzo were both converted CBs who ended up being 1st rd picks as WRs.

*Terry Glenn was a walk on(although he was not a Tressel recruit won the Fred Biletnikoff Award in 1995 and was NFL offensive rookie of the year with the Pats under Parcels).

Santonio was a 4-star according to Scout.
Nick Mangold was a 4 star according to Rivals and was unrated by Scout.
Vernon Gholston was a 4-star according to Rivals.

You can't just pick the service that rates them the lowest. If you want to talk about a staff that does more with less, then look at Iowa or Wisconsin. Our staff could if they needed to but, thankfully, we recruit well.

We have for the most part, been off topic for a about 4 pages now, so allow me to offer an observation. Almost every year, we always seem to pick up a "stud" late in the recruiting process. Here we are, a month before the high school season even starts, with a GREAT start to a top 5 recruiting class and we are acting like we're doomed!:)

Post of the year, Thank You!

We have all exhausted the "AJ Hawk and or JL arguments" over the the past several years, time to move on.

Now back to Trey.

If tOSU can't get TD, they will be just fine. If I recall correctly wasn't Laurinaitis a three start coming out of high school? All I am saying is :osu: turns lower rated LB's into 5 stars.

People, I may take some negative rep for this, but hear me out first.

This "we turn 3 stars into 5 stars" mentality over the last couple of pages of this thread might be taking things a little too far.

Be honest--if you had been on another team's site, where the Ohio State logo was replaced with a different logo, and the statement I quoted above was followed by the word "BARWIS!!!1!!1!"...you would have made fun of it, right? (I would have.)

Yes, it's true that we've taken some recruits with not many stars and they've done quite well. Unfortunately, to paint the complete picture, we've also had some recruits that had a lot of stars that didn't do quite as well as expected. Some of those were because of injuries, academic problems...and some just didn't perform as well as any of us would have hoped.

Here are some names to consider: D'Andrea, EJ Underwood, Dukes, Mitchum, Sirjo Welch, Hoobler, Schoenhoft, J O'Neal, to name a couple. I am NOT bashing Buckeyes here. I am a Buckeye fan, and I appreciate that each of these gentlemen helped the Buckeye football program. However, looking at it from a balanced point of view--read their threads while they were recruits, and many of us (in many cases including me) had higher expectations for on-the-field performance.

The fact remains (someone had a thread on this on BP somewhere)--higher rated recruits tend to do better than lower-rated recruits. Yes, sometimes our 3-stars end up playing like 5-stars...and sometimes our 5-stars end up playing like 3-stars. That happens everywhere.

Those on this thread who have said that they believe it's important for Ohio State to land a couple of quality linebacker recruits this year have expressed a reasonable opinion. We don't necessarily need Trey DePriest specifically, but it would be nice to get a couple of well-regarded LBs in this class. To infer that their opinion isn't reasonable because we'll just turn our 3-stars into 5-stars isn't completely fair to those others.

I appreciate Buckeye Planet because of its ability to respect those who take reasonable information and come up with different rational opinions. Let's keep that going.

And now, let's give Trey his moment. Regardless of who he chooses, he seems to have gone about this process in a respectful way. Good luck to him, no matter where he goes, except for any days in the future if he ever faces off against Ohio State.

actually they have to work more with less, but the premiere hidden gems at lb were laurinaitis and hawk, and no one from wisconsin or iowa has been on their level. They have had a few on par with homan or wilhelm, but not defensive poy caliber guys.

Sure, 5 stars pan out more often than 3 stars, but osu always has good to great lb play regardless of stars.

Depriest was a guy they really wanted. Price is another one. I will be thrilled with either for good reason.

i would roll my eyes at fans of teams who cant develop crable or burgess... meanwhile ezeh and mouton perforn at the same level as very mediocre walkons like leach.

I would not make fun of wisconsin fans shrugging off the loss of marcus lattimore. They do routinely churn out stud rbs from low ranked recruits.

this is a pretty bizarre shift in your argument. You are finding fault with people overselling the 3 stars become 5 stars, then you rattle off the exact reasons and examples behind their argument

It is unfair to meltdown over a 5 star when other well regarded lbs are still in play. It is unfait to price to think things are really ugly until all of the price types head elsewhere. This isnt the ol where osu often comes up empty or close to it in recruiting, osu brings in droves of stud lbs year after year. They hsve earned the benefit of the doubt
