Nittany Insider: Maiden Voyage -

Burke continues to prove point

Penn State men?s basketball coach Ed DeChellis staged a coup when he got Columbus (Ohio) Northland junior point guard Trey Burke to commit this past fall. Burke is one of the more underrated lead guards in the class and the floor general for a team ranked No. 1 in the nation (and happens to be located minutes from where the Fighting Evan Turners call home).

Now, the bad news: Because he's a junior, Burke's commitment is verbal, and thus non-binding. And with his team in the national spotlight, Burke is receiving plenty of attention. Baylor, Georgetown, Cincinnati and Notre Dame are maintaining interest and contact. His commitment could be in peril if DeChellis is fired after this season.

Either way, however, PSU fans and coaches could have to sweat this one out until signing day next year. And if the home-state Ohio State Buckeyes end up offering -- they like him, but an offer may be unlikely because they have a commitment from 2011 blue-chip point Shannon Scott -- then all bets are off.

This one upsets me a little bit...Don't get me wrong I am happy with Scott, but Burke is going to be a dang good 4 year player in the big ten, and once he gets a little bigger to go with his lightning quick speed, and his already good jump shot, he is going to be a force...

I don't see how early departures, for the NBA or otherwise, would matter or make any difference as to an offer to Burke appearing.

It would seem that it would be much more of a question of roster needs and priorities at this point. Matta should have at least 5 schollies to give in the 2011 class. The question is, would he want to use 2/5 on PG prospects in that class?

I can understand why he hasn't yet, as it would seem some frontcourt size and at least one more outside player would be higher priority needs.

I do think it might happen eventually though. Just have a feeling they'll decide they don't want to lose out on his talent.
