Trey Burke (NBA Journeyman)

Columbus Dispatch
By Bob Hunter
When Michigan point guard Darius Morris
left for the NBA, a huge opportunity opened for Northland graduate Trey Burke, who figured to play behind Morris for a season. Burke now finds himself in competition with senior Stu Douglass and freshman Carlton Brundidge, and from what teammates are saying, he seems intent on seizing the job.

When he arrived in Ann Arbor and began taking part in gym sessions with other players, it became clear that there was no holding back Burke, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound former Mr. Basketball.

?He was going at it, taking it to us guys,? Tim Hardaway Jr. said. ?Taking it to Stu and Zack (Novak) and Eso Akunne. He knows the challenge he?s facing coming in and working his way up.?

Burke, a teammate of Ohio State star and Northland graduate Jared Sullinger two years ago, could hardly be classified as a surprise.

?He plays within himself and is comfortable with who he is as a basketball player, and it shows on the court,? Douglass said. ?He has a lot of talent, and he and Carlton are really picking up the offense very well and are coming along. We expected that.?

Michigan's Trey Burke reconsidering NBA and U-M future

Michigan freshman point guard Trey Burke spent the weekend meeting with his family in Columbus, Ohio, and had returned to Michigan expected to declare for the NBA draft, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

But when the situation became public after this afternoon?s online reports from CBSSports.com and the Free Press made him national news, Burke apparently began to contemplate more about whether he would indeed leave U-M.

Burke and coach John Beilein made no public statements about Burke?s position. Burke?s father, Benji, tweeted this afternoon: ?Trey Burke has not declared for the NBA draft. He is still enrolled at the University of Michigan.?
The tweet did not refute that Burke was intending to declare for the NBA, only that he had not as of 3:16 p.m. today. It also mentioned that Burke was in school, where he could remain finishing the final weeks of the winter semester regardless of his decision.
.
.
.
Benji Burke told the Free Press last month his son was seriously considering leaving, saying, ?If I had to guess, Trey would love to go to the NBA.?

Not to belabor the point, but this could be Thad's biggest swing and miss--it kills me to say it, because he's playing at scUM and all, but Burke may be the best player in the country so far this season.
I don't know if you can call it a swing and miss because Scott made a verbal commitment I believe in is junior year and I think Matta was not going to recruit another PG. Also remember that Burke initially committed to Penn State.

Lets call it an unfortunate by-product of Thad's approach of securing commitments from elite prospects very early. In the old days, we would have sought a commitment around Christmas if their senior season. And by then Thad would have chosen Burke over Scott.

But that approach also landed us a lot of studs that wouldn't have considered OSU otherwise

Good points to both you and Davey. Maybe not a swing and miss, so much as just a miss with respect to scouting (which, admittedly, would be an extremely difficult job). It's tough to watch a kid from your own backyard go play at your chief rival and become one of the best players in the country...especially when the kid would've played for you if offered.

You are only allowed to have 13 players on scholarship at a time. You can't offer everyone. The coach has to make a decision as to who he wants and live with the consequences. That's why he's paid the "big bucks".

time will tell on this decision. Burke is better right now and will probably be gone to the NBA next season. Scott looks to be a 4 year player who made a huge improvement from his Freshman year. I like the idea of having Scott for 2 more years while Michigan is breaking in a new point guard.

Sounds good. But rather have a national title last year with Burke & Sully combo
