Tressel vs Carr - Who Is More Respected?

sandgk;886596; said:
If you think that is generally so then how do you explain the ratings for Paterno, Stoops, Fulmer and other coaching luminaries on that list with established reputations?

I would think, as I said before, that the players are getting what they thought they were getting when they signed on. That in of itself is a comendable.

Why was I surprised Carr is so well respected? One, because I'm admittadly biased but, moreover because I hear over and over (through the years) how players are told they would be at x position, but when they get to scum they are competing for another. Also, I would think that with losing the last two games of the year over and over would be frustrating and "respect" could be lost (whether this is justifiable is beside the point).

The day that JT or anyone elses ceases to respect Carr as a coach or as a person is the day he will beat your butt on the field.
Do not make the mistake of thinking less of him in either vein just because we have been beating him.

I agree with what you're saying. My opinion holds no weight come game days regardless. My point was looking at it from a recruits perspective, I don't see how carr and scum holds up favorably against Tressel and tOSU in todays conditions. It's my opinion only. I don't necessarily disrespect carr or scum as they are a fine program (Just not that close to tOSU right now).

Lloyd Carr has just as much class and is as good of a man as Jim Tressel is.. Take off your blinders..

What's your knock on respecting Carr?? A couple of drive by handshakes?? Well Tressel has the whole Youngstown thing and the Clarett allegations...

I don't get you folks who act like Tressel is far and away the most respected coach in the game

Because we are Ohio State "fan's", ask a Gator and they will tell you it's Urban, or a Nit and they will say JoePa...

This is not to say %100 will but that the majority will. It's an internet message board, albeit the best Buckeye board even though we continue allow Tibs to post here.... Take it for what it is.

Carr got a 4.6/5.0 at coachratings.com for fulfilling promises made to recruits. Such claims are overstated by rival fanbases, which is natural. The Michigan fanbase does the same thing over the Clarett debacle, etc.

The only school for which all the bad rumors and stereotypes are true is Notre Dame. :wink2:

I am admittadly biased. I have stated that my point of view is an opinion. I kindly ask that you respect one persons (and I would guess many more have similar) opinion. I am simply not seeing carr stacking up to Tressel. In fact, very few people I have met have such a presence about them that Tressel has. He is a very faithful and humble person and is very interested in the person. I guess I can see where some people could be turned off by his strong and apparant devotion and may not feel it has a place on the football field.
Instead of slamming someone elses opinion it would be more helpful if you would provide insight as to the pros of carr over Tressel.

Asking about the ratings for Paterno, Stoops, Fulmer and ....

Kind of confused by that response ...

Are you saying recruits thought going in that Paterno would treat white players differently from black players, be distant and unconcerned with his young charges personal lives or difficulties? That recruits going in thought Stoops was a corrupt drill seargent who would break his word to them after the recruiting process was done, or that Fulmer was Corrupt and Troubled and lacked interest in a players position?

Or that the foregoing is commendable?

I think it is comendable that you follow through with what you're selling and are upfront and honest. Coaches that have done this I would expect would score high on the list.
Conversely, coaches that score low, I would expect, failed to provide what they were selling. To me this makes a lot of sense with Paterno as, as I understand it, he doesn't do a significant part of the day to day coaching. That could be a turn off to many players when filling out the evaluations.

Two thoughts:

1. IMO Carr had the better team in the first two games and lost both. Tressel had the better team in the third game and lost. The teams have been well matched the last two years and Tressel has won both. But no coach has "owned" this game for long since 1918. I'd love it if the bucks laid a '90s' on Michigan, but I wouldn't bet on it.

2. I would suspect that the coaches that are the most suspect are the ones that take "problem" schools and turn around their fortunes. Meyer at Utah comes to mind as does Miles at Okie State. A coach at OSU or Michigan has so much to draw upon in the way of history, alum support, grads in the NFL and money that their biggest problems may well be curbing the support of boosters.

Not close to tOSU now? Umm they are pre-season top 3 everywhere, and were number 2 last year in the Game (dont remember talks of rematch??).. dosen't get much closer or much 'now'er than that. I grew up with Cooper, and I'll never forget the 90s. Carr is a damn good coach.. and from everything i hear a pretty damn good guy too.

scUM's been down the last couple, but a down year for them is 4 losses.. same goes for tOSU.. we're much alike than we are diffrent.

Kirk Ferentz is way up there with Carr and Tressel as well, the Big Ten has some quality coaches, that's for sure.
Don't forget MSU new coach.. Mark something :wink2:

I have a friend whose son was being recruited to go to K-State under Bill Snyder and he told me stories that if I din't know the guy and his son I would find hard to believe. This seems to back up their assertions....

The best phrase describing Coach Snyder is:
Mentor/Role Model: 8.0%
Well Respected: 40.0%
Father Figure: 4.0%
Corrupt: 48.0%
WOW!!

I can't really find something here that I can agree with, other than scUM had the better team in '01.
Carr had a better team than our 14-0 NC team in '02?
As far as putting a "90's" on them, Coach T is halfway there!
