Tressel going for it on 4th and 1

Did you agree at the time with going for it on 4th and 1?

Thing is though in the post game presser Jim himself says "wrong call" - so you would not be disagreeing with him at all (or really doubting him) for he has no doubt that the call was the wrong call.

Q. Jim, the 4th and one call with like four minutes left in the second quarter, is that one of those all or nothing sort of calls that you're looking to spark your team?
COACH TRESSEL: We thought we could make it, and the good news was is our defense did a great job of holding them to three, which was outstanding.
But, you know, it ended up being the wrong call, obviously

Yeah, but that's just JT putting the blame on himself, IMO.

As in, "the right call would have given us a first down".

So, if I say it was the right call, am I disagreeing with JT? Now I'm confused. :tongue2:

Tressel gets paid the big bucks to be Tressel, conservative almost to a fault, playing a safe field position game. I didn't like to see Tressel not being Tressel on that 4th down, it felt like someone had stolen my coach and replaced him with someone else. I didn't agree with the call at the time, but it looked to me like Beanie could've perhaps cut outside instead of running straight into the pile and gotten the 1st that way. Not blaming JT, it wasn't a boneheaded call, but it also wasn't what I've come to expect, and that concerned me.

I will say this, I'm looking forward to next year with a healthy dose of the I-formation, Beanie, and dust coulds (although I do hope they're a bit more than 3 yards apart ).

Of course it was the right call.

JT sent in the play did he not?

I have no business questioning a coach who won 14 games in one season. JT has forgotten more about football than I'll ever know.
Well then, case dismissed.. why even create this thread if JT is always 100% right?

I felt JT believed he had to change the dynamic. If I recall correctly, there was third down and only a yard or so to go, but that aborted. Shoot, if you are going to win an NC, you have to take chances when everything is going wrong. If you cannot get a yard with Beanie, it is going to be a long day. But, even so, bringing in Beanie sort of signals a line plunge. Don't know if some kind of deception might have worked better. But, frankly, deception success in this game was not too much of an option when all was said and done.

Go Bucks!

First of all. Every replay that I saw it looked like Beanie had crossed the thirty, therefore, getting the first down. However, the QB sneak with a smallish QB, when Beanie is in the game, is not the way the 3rd down should've gone, imo. Punting on fourth down is how fourth down should've gone, imo.

I agree. I was yelling at the damn tv like a fool for a review of the spot. To me it looked like a first down.

At the time I also thought JT should have gambled and gone for it (and, right or wrong, I still do). I guess that's why I'm not getting Nick Sabin's money. :wink2:

It was also mentioned earlier that it was an uncharacteristic call for JT, which is true. However, the way Florida was moving the ball at will, something radical had to be done to shake things up.

At the time I didn't really agree with the call because it signalled that we were playing their game and out of our "element" -- but I could also see why he did it, and can't fault him there. The Oline never showed up to play last night...
