Tressel going for it on 4th and 1

Did you agree at the time with going for it on 4th and 1?

On Swamp Gas, some idiot said that Jim Tressel went for it because he "didn't respect the Florida front four".

Personally, I think they're bleeding this "no respect" thing a bit too far.

Imagine. "How dare they actually run a play? How disrespectful!!! We'll show them."

It was a stupid call, no question.

It was all risk no reward.
The risk was giving up the ball.
The reward was getting a 1st down with 70 yards to go. In other words, no reward.

I think more coaches should go for it on 4th and inches since a sneak is almost automatic. But that wasn't inches...it was almost a full yard. And the sneak already failed.

Stupid, stupid call.

personally I hated the call and thought it was a bone-head call. On the other hand I understand where tressel was trying to find a way to light a spark under the teams ass.

If we would have made it on 4th and 1 we would all be sitting here saying what a great call it was.

not really, since the final score just would have been 34-14. there is nothing to indicate that making it would change the fact that Florida was far superior to OSU.

I agree and i'm not going to get into the what ifs, but getting that 4th and 1 could have been huge.

Forget about 4th down, I thought the third down play was the opportunity to do something big.

I was hoping for an i-formation play-action of some sort, and take a shot deep down the field. If we failed to make the play, then we should have punted it away and let it be.

It was very anti-Tressel to go for it. I thought Tressel was all about field-position. We were only down by 10 points, there was only a little bit of time left before the end of the half, a defensive stop would have ended the half.

A 10 point deficit is not very big when you have Smith, Pittman and Gonzalez on your offense.

Instead, we didn't convert, our defense came up and Florida was now up by 13. On the next drive, we looked flustered and panicked, which lead to a Smith fumble and a Florida touchdown.

It's now a 20-point deficit, I think that really broke our spirits.

The one thing I did not get, was our opening kickoff, right after the KR TD, why did we squib it? I think we started off playing scared of giving up a "big play" and we continued that the rest of the game (which explains the soft zone coverage).

I don't know if this has been tossed around since this is the first I have been here since the game.

Tibor, you are 100% correct but that's so irrelevant. JT displayed the poorest coaching job I have seen this year from game plan to motivation.

Remember, he has been there before now what 8 times?

I still respect the hell out of him but if there was one person that shouldn't have happened to it was him.

Well, hrm... I understand the motivation that Tress was looking for, everytime we gave them the ball it was great field position either due to bad coverage or through penalty. So I understand what he was trying to accomplish, maybe they get the first, a little MO starts going their way, a drive and the deficit is down to 3.

Yet it didn't go like that and resulted in another 10 points on the board and the bucks getting their asses kicked.

I don't think we can criticize JT on 1 call...we can on the gameplan but I don't think on one call we can...There were many more factors in the loss than the 4th and 1 play..

Sure you can...games are lost on single calls. I agree that there were multiple factors, but every call in every game can be debated.

All we ask is that people back up their opinion...
