Game Thread tOSU vs. Virginia Tech, Sept 6th @ 8pm ET, ESPN & ESPN3 Skycam

I watched the game and noticed that V Tech played Urban's spread offense with their NOTHING BUT OPTION defense like they were playing Georgia Tech, did any other team try to duplicate the defense that V tech played at any point throughout the year to stop the Buckeyes?

I am curious because I know that the Buckeyes won the rest of their games, I just wanted to know/see how they adjusted to the pressure that V Tech applied with that particular defensive set.

The only reason that defense worked is because VA Tech's corners were good enough to sit on an island with Ohio State's receivers. Most of the teams on Ohio State's scheduled tried it, but between not having good enough defensive linemen (with the exception of Sparty and Penn State), most of them didn't have any success. Penn State came the closest to duplicating the feat, but we just aren't sure how much JT's knee sprain played into how conservative the offense was in the 2nd half.

Had the receivers caught some very catch-able balls early in that game it might have caused V Tech to adjust their defense. As the year went along the receivers did a better job.

The line played like the inexperienced unit they were (3 had only started once, another had three starts under his belt) and had breakdowns all night, whether attempting to run or pass.

RB Elliott ran a bit tentative behind the struggling line (compared to the physical, punishing runner that pounded the rock a few weeks later).

The WRs dropped a ton of passes, costing them at least 10 points.

The QB struggled, in part because all of the above was failing so miserably.

Teams tried the same defense. The difference was none of the above happened again.

Teams tried it week after week and got decimated. PSU was giving up noticeable yardage to EzE until JT's knee and nerves brought the offense to a screeching halt.

Aubie, just a heads up, we don't typically start new threads when something comes to mind. This has been rehashed frequently in the Bama thread and of course the Va Tech thread.

Sorry, thank you for the heads up.
