USC negotiating possible move to Rose Bowl

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? USC is negotiating with Rose Bowl officials to begin playing Trojans home games in Pasadena next year, school administrators said Tuesday.

A potential lease agreement would be considered at the Dec. 6 meeting of the Rose Bowl Operating Committee, USC officials said in a written statement.

USC, which has played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum since 1923, would have to share the Rose Bowl with its football rival, UCLA, which already plays home games in Pasadena.

"Although we have been a faithful tenant of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for 80 years, we must now seek other alternatives for the good of our football program and our fans," USC administration chief Todd R. Dickey said.

USC has been seeking control of the venue and has offered more than $100 million over 10 years to fund its repair and restoration.

It's a red herring when it's used as an argument to dispense with tradition. But as a point unto itself it is simply a true statement: nothing more, nothing less.

It's a true statement that no one really ever disputes though. Sure, it's essentially a home game and no one really denies it. So why bring it up?

People deny it all the time. (see above) The last three companies I've worked at have all had people who swore up and down that it was, practically as well as officially, a neutral site game. If you haven't had the conversation lately, I'm happy for you. I haven't been so lucky.

I'd be less concerned with why DBB brought it up than I would be mis-labeling something that someone else wrote.

Here's a reference sheet for the future:

Fallacies

Red Herring

Red Herring said:
A Red Herring is a fallacy in which an irrelevant topic is presented in order to divert attention from the original issue. The basic idea is to "win" an argument by leading attention away from the argument and to another topic. This sort of "reasoning" has the following form:
  1. Topic A is under discussion.
  2. Topic B is introduced under the guise of being relevant to topic A (when topic B is actually not relevant to topic A).
  3. Topic A is abandoned.
This sort of "reasoning" is fallacious because merely changing the topic of discussion hardly counts as an argument against a claim.

I used the term because this topic was raised as a diversion to ultimately claim yet another situation where a Buck fan feels screwed.

And no, I don't hear anyone claiming that it's a neutral site for bowl games. I hadn't heard it until it was posted hear. And when I speak with my associates who are USC alums, they have, to a man, stated that they would at least have that specific advantage if/when they play the Bucks at the Rose Bowl this year.

Not by me. If you think so, you have read something into my statement that I did not say. People frequently talk about outrageous opinions here when it is the outrageousness of the opinion and not the subject matter of the opinion that they find worthy of discussion.

As I said, I'm happy for you. But the fact that it is not part of your personal experience does not mean that "No one" makes the claim.
