Game Thread tOSU vs. Maryland (Homecoming), Sat 10/10 @ 12p ET, BTN

I watched most of the scum/Kitty game. Like it or not, fucking scum's defense is legit. They shut out the same team last week--on the road--that just lit us up for 28 points. They flat beat the [Mark May] out of a pretty decent Northwestern team (which upset Stanford in their opener). Their offense isn't a juggernaut, but they have indeed improved significantly and put up 24 offensive points against the top scoring defense in the country. The Harbraugh™, as much of a whack job as he is, has his team playing very well.

If we play like we did in the second halves of the VT game and today, we'll bet Michigan. If we play like we did against Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, or Indiana, we're in serious trouble.

Yep, you don't shut out 3 straight opponents and not have a good defense. Regardless of how bad you think the opponents offenses are. When's the last time OSU shut out 3 opponents? I can only recall 2 shutouts in a row.

I guess I don't get it.

Last year the team played great when they beat Maryland 52-24.
This year the team has major questions or is struggling after beating Maryland 49-28.

If it weren't for TTUN beating Maryland 28-0 (with only 3 Offensive TDs) there would be far less critics.

Last year was an exceptionally rare year where fans could enjoy progress even while flaws were very present because they weren't supposed to do anything without Miller. Now that they're the champs (and #1), any and all struggles are magnified and the grind is painful when it isn't a well-oiled machine.

To tell the truth, most people didn't trust the offense until November. But yes, despite what people are complaining about, the offense is still putting up points. It's just a couple of huge mistakes in placement on defense that made the game less lopsided.

What jwins said. Last year, few expected Ohio State to play for the NC until about the 4th quarter against Wisconsin. This year, everything is focused on repeating.

Sounds to me, based off of that explanation that the issue has to do more with the fans expectations rather than the teams execution...

To some degree but letting a horrific offense run wild on your defense is painful and worrisome (especially when that has been the calling card of this team this year). The same was true when terrible opposing defenses were suffocating a very talented but poorly executed offensive attack from Columbus.

Expecting more means we are spoiled, entitled and worry about what's coming later. Of course, this team was trying to lose to Indiana (and playing with fire vs UM) right before the trilogy, so obviously our perspective isn't the best :)

While I understand not being pleased with allowing 28 points, isn't it a tad bit early to claim the sky is falling on the defense? Especially since this is the same defense that had 3 games of pick 6s, 2 INTS yesterday (coupled with 6 players registering a TFL), and a turnover in every game so far this season.

Leading up to this game it was"the silver Bullets are Back!" Now we're worried because we gave up one TD in each quarter? What? It's not like it was 14-21 points in multiple quarters of play.

I understand the hype and expectations, but holy crap the team will be just fine. Especially after a 21 point victory in which the Offense played balanced and great.

I seem to remember horrific offenses running wild on our defense for the past 3 years up until the BTCG last year. That said, the one criticism of our D that is a valid takeaway from this is the apparent weakness to a mobile QB (and Indiana's back-up). Thankfully, our toughest upcoming opponents don't have one.

Yup, see the edit above. Frankly very little about OSU's team was NC caliber until the postseason began in Indy. Survive and advance and hope you peak at the right time.

What's troubling about that weakness is how often they seemed unaware of his umpteenth scramble. I don't like it but I can live with missing tackles in space on occasion but there were a lot of snaps where the defense was behaving like Shane Morris was dropping back and shocking everyone with a 25 yd scamper.

Agreed, especially since he was not really a passing threat. I know the guy had the long pass early, but otherwise, he couldn't pass for shit. I think he only had 3 completions well into the second half

I didn't say the sky was falling. I said it was troubling. Their entire offense was the QBs legs, yet the defense seemed to lose track of him frequently, to the tune of 170 yds on the ground. It's even more troubling on the heels of Zander  also running wild last week.

It's encouraging seeing Barrett fix the arithmetic on offense, Jones settling in, Miller actually being a weapon instead of a negative (primarily because of others in the past), etc. I came away from that game encouraged by the progress. I'm speaking to the reasons why people are concerned (me to a lesser extent).

To even play in Indy (let alone the playoffs), they have to survive Sparty and a surging Michigan program. Right now they find themselves in dogfights with average to terrible football teams. Those matchups don't look very enjoyable for now. Hopefully these are growing pains like last year, though it's concerning that they seem to be starting over when they lost so few parts.
