Game Thread tOSU vs. Hawaii, 12 Sep @ 3:30p ET, BTN

This is college football. Don't want them peaking the second week of September. Give the coaches something to bitch about all week. Its all good...
Exactly freaking right. I was thinking this most of the day. I don't want to play our best football until November. Don't want to see em play like garbage either but 38-0 is pretty dang good and we broke Hawaii's streak of consecutive 100 yard passing days today which has stood for stupid long time. Defense had it going, offense is still a little confused.

hmm, they may be peaking already since they started 1-1 last year.

And it's truly amazing how many times you win when the other team doesn't score.

Suffice it to say Army's 56 pts. per game scoring average is not in jeopardy, even by Baylor and TCU. I digress.

that is all ...

Not sure if already discussed but @MililaniBuckeye were you expecting this type of game? Rare to see UH's pass game and our run game bottled up so well.

Great getting the shutout. I'd take 38-0 over 59-21 every time.
I didn't see us getting held under 40, but I think I did say that I felt we'd struggle to break 50. I also didn't expect to shut out Hawaii, but did expect to contain them pretty well. Knowing Hawaii, they'll now promptly go home and shit the bed against UC Davis...

As for the offense, does anyone remember how the o fared in week 2 last season? Enough said.
No fucking way you can compare a totally green OL, QB, and RB going against one of the better defenses in the nation, with two Heisman-caliber QBs, and Heisman-favorite RB, and possibly the best OL in the country going against a mediocre-at-best defense.

The situations between game 2 of 2014 and game 2 of 2015 could not be more different...

There's no disputing however that this team is ahead of where they were this time last year - in terms of performance, results, and ranking.

Perhaps they are not ahead of where people expected them to be though. People seem to see this as a continuation of last year's team rather than the new team that it actually is. Key players and coaches are gone and have to be replaced. This is the only sport I can think of with no real preseason, so the plane has to built as it's flown. Sure - there are plenty of things that need to be fixed. The point of that comparison though is that there are almost always things that need to be fixed at this point in the season. Fans would be wise to adjust their expectations for these early non-conference games. "Plunger or bust" just isn't a reasonable way to look at things at this stage of the season.

I want to preface my post by saying that I am very, very happy to walk away with a resounding 38-0 victory. It is a win and we move on with a 2-0 record. However, I was incredibly frustrated throughout the game. I give Hawaii's defense partial credit because there were times they stepped up and made some pretty good plays.

But mostly, our offense shot themselves in the foot repeatedly. False starts. Holding penalties. Dropped passes. Botched snaps. High/misguided snaps. Missed blocks (a TON). Errant passes. Miscommunication on plays. Simply put, this was a really bad showing for our offie in terms of focus and discipline, which is what is disappointing to me...maybe the worst under UFM imho. And it was not just the players, but I felt a lot of blame goes towards the coaches for lack of preparation. I know some of that is explained by a short week with a couple lost days, but some of the issues were flat out due to complacency or a lack of focus. I am happy to walk away with the win and really, the box score looks pretty good. I saw some crazy shit happen in college football today and we are not immune from being the victim, so a comfortable win is a great win. I just really hope the attitude we saw today does not pop up again the rest of the season. If this is a learning experience that wakes our guys up, then it is valuable and a great time for it to happen. But it has to just be that.

And aside from the offense looking spotty, the special teams was just awful again. Missed field goal on a botched play, kick out of bounds on the kickoff (AGAIN), bad punting overall...we have to get this all fixed.

All of this being said, the defense looked AWESOME today. I know we need perspective in that Hawaii is not a world beater, but the shut out was very convincing. There was not one point I was even concerned about them scoring. Our LBs looked like missiles, the DL wreaked havoc all day, and the DBs were absolute ball hawks. Cannot ask for more there, I am stoked about the Silver Bullets (yes, they are earning that name).
