tOSU vs Delaware State 2008

Diebler looked really good last night, shot 3-6 from three and the first one went in and out, good shooting night for him and after the first one dropped his confidence in his shot seemed to pick up. Also, he was the only player who seemed to be looking to feed Mullens down low, which blew me away that we weren't force feeding him every play, but Diebs tried. Every time I watch him I am amazed at how well he seems to understand the game. Don't know how the other players on the team view it but as I watch I can't help but think we have a coach on the floor, just the way he acts out there.

Buford can score, period. He may be the best shooter on the team, and the other players know it, they were looking to get him open threes all night. Didn't see much penetration from anyone last night, probably due mostly to the zone D, so didn't get to see much else of his game but he was a very impressive shooter. His defense wasn't bad but wasn't spectacular either.

Mullens isn't nearly as good defensively as DL, so I wouldn't be suprised to see Dallas steal some of the BJ's minutes, especially early in the season. Offensively, Mullens has a nice stroke and looked adept when he got the ball down low, which wasn't very often. Hopefully playing against man defenses we will give him the ball more often.

DL is a player, especially on defense. Those blocked shots were all things of beauty, not biting on pump fakes and as soon as the ball was released he would get up and swat it, those blocks weren't just tipped balls they were swatted out of bounds halfway down the court type blocks. His length and improved quickness on defense are going to cause problems for teams all year. On offense, didn't feed the post much this game like I said so can't comment on his post offense, but his free throw looks improved, if only slightly (whats up with the Shaq-esque one hand release??) and he was running the floor well.

Simmons has a beautiful stroke from three, if we shoot from three like we did last night, especially Diebler, Simmons, and Buford, then its going to be a very good year cause that will spread the D and allow Turner/Lighty/Buford to penetrate and not allow teams to double BJ/DL. Simmons also played well defensively. While Crater played a lot of minutes I can't tell you a single play he made, probably just a result of the zone D preventing him from his drive-and-dish game but I don't think he attempted a shot. I don't want to say he was underwhelming, because against the zone D he isn't going to thrive, but Simmons was MUCH more impressive tonight. Very suprised at the lack of time for PJ Hill, figured he would be in the rotation with his experience, quickness, and defensive intensity. Guess not.

Turner and Lighty were both as expected, good on defense and very solid on offense. Offut played but didn't really see anything out of him, Madsen was definitely solid out there tonight, he is a hustle player and maybe not as good as Twigs but he will provide minutes off the bench to spell BJ/DL, at least until we get Kecman back.

Feel like we may struggle again on offense some this year, we are going to have to shoot teams out of zones if we are going to exploit Crater's ability and BJ's ability, and after tonight I definitely think we can but on nights when the shots aren't falling I don't know how we are going to generate offense, thats what still worries me.

On defense we are going to be very good again this year, maybe I'm the only one but I really like the 3-2 zone we run, we forced 3 or 4 shot clock violations last night and a few of the 3's they did hit on us were either way behind the 3 point line or just bad shots that went up and in. Only thing that worries me, especially if we are playing 4 small 1 big, is we are going to struggle on the boards again this year probably, but I felt like the effort was there last night, which was something we lacked a lot last year.

Can't wait to see us go against a better team, hopefully we can get fine-tuned before we play 2 top-15 teams on the road.

Keeping in mind the competition we faced last night.......I was looking for some key things going in......

Rebounding........we actually got beat on the boards.

Defensive intensity......it was there all game long.

Perimeter threats.......Simmons, Buford, Diebs, Turner and Lighty all looked improved from the perimeter.

Depth......we are realistically 10-11 deep........we have many parts and are very versatile........

I also noticed that everyone seemed very comfortable out on the court.........

Madsen will get some minutes this year but I don't think they will be "quality" minutes. He has good skills but is somewhat limited athletically and I think when it is crunch time you either see one big guy (Dallas or BJ) and 4 small or 2 big guys (Dallas and BJ) and three small guys. I think Madsen is the type of guy who will give one of the bigs for a few minutes but will not see extensive playing time.

First time that I have ever seen Simmons and came away very impressed. I think anytime they play against a zone defense we will see him at the PG rather than Crater or at least I should say he will get more playing time when the other team is playing zone. The other guys did what I would have expected them to do with another year of practice under their belts. I would like them to get out of the zone defense and maybe they will as the season progresses.

the highlighted portion is how i feel. madsen will play. he will be used to steal minutes in games this year. those will be important. if he can play games were he has to play 8-9, 12 mins he will be called upon to make sure the other team doesnt get a push and a run. that is a big role. twig played that role very well the last few years, he may have been somes whipping boy and he is/was limited in such the manner but he deserved a lot of credit. this is the role that i hope to see kyle grow into.

i also saw geniue team feeling. granted i may have said that last year early a few times...

I think our rebounding will continue to struggle as long as we continue to play zone defense especially against teams that shoot quite a bit from the perimeter. It is just very difficult to box out your man playing zone defense. It is hard to believe with a team that looks so athletic that they would have a hard time adjusting to man-to-man. I realize this is college and not high school but some of the man-to-man principles still do apply. In addition, we can always have one shot blocker on the floor be it Dallas or BJ.

Agree here from watching them play last night but they did play against a zone defense most of the time which makes perimeter shooting a little easier. All of the above-mentioned looks like they have pretty good strokes but I want to hold off judgment until I see them play against a man-to-man defense or at least a better team that has some length.

I guess from all the hoopla I heard about BJ I was expecting a little more. I have never seen him before and he really needs to get more aggressive both defensively and offensively. I think playing in a zone defense also hurts him defensively because guys can take him a little ways from the basket and he needs to recover much quicker. That probably will come with time but he really needs to anticipate more. Offensively, just by watching him shoot three throws I could tell that he is extremely coordinated and has a very nice stroke and I am sure that carries over into when he is around the basket. I know this is the first game of the season and I know that I have never seen him play before but I will have to see a lot more of him before I think he is a one and done. I thought that Dallas played extremely well last night and it looks like he is carrying over his late performances from last year with a great deal of improvement. Instead of him stealing some of BJ's minutes it might be the other way around which would be extremely nice.

Before everyone jumps all over me all of the comments above are judged from one game against a team which was not very good.

You may have, but I don't recall it. You were concerned about energy and effort from the very beginning of the season, as I remember it.

I agree there is room for vast improvement.........those things will be worked on after reviewing the tape....

i doubt the actual team depth is that deep in regular comp games. certainly deeper than last year though.

Turner, Diebs, BJ, Lighty, Madsen, Buford, Dallas, Simmons, Crater and Kechman with PJ playing in an emergency......that is 10-11.....

i think the zone might have something to do with hiding someone. just a hunch. granted last year thads team had a lot of success with the zone. its a good way to control tempo. not many teams play zone and i like the press. i like the different looks it brings. deep down i feel it is to hide a fish...

agreed, lots of open looks last night. but they were knocked down. that is key. the team hasnt had a designated shooter since ivan left. the ability to hit perm shots will open up the floor a lot.

I think playing in a zone defense also hurts him defensively because guys can take him a little ways from the basket and he needs to recover much quicker. this is the efficiency i speak of. hes quick and i actually think quicker than what you see on the floor, a major issue is wasted motion. his footwork isnt tight. hes making 3 steps when 2 can do. that means he could get there in 67% of the time. it seems minor but its huge. weve seen this with all three big men. i think his footwork will improve, hell play a tighter more efficient game and postioning will improve. That probably will come with time but he really needs to anticipate more. Offensively, just by watching him shoot three throws I could tell that he is extremely coordinated and has a very nice stroke and I am sure that carries over into when he is around the basket. I thought that Dallas played extremely well last night and it looks like he is carrying over his late performances from last year with a great deal of improvement. agreed, but dallas has had one full year. you saw his improvement as the year went on. the thing is its the same key things that need to be worked on. its a good thing when you walk away and say yeah, he played good. but their is more than. that should make you smile. dallas also brings a physical presence similar to dials. (heck terrance had the same things ime talking about to work on, so did velimir). Instead of him stealing some of BJ's minutes it might be the other way around which would be extremely nice. no one owns minutes, they are earned-usually in practice...

you are entitled to your own views. good thoughts. i also think its cool that many people can watch the same game and have different take aways. the things i read and hear from you guys open me up to watch and look for things in future games. keying me into to certain aspects and making the games more enjoyable.

no doubt i think we can all say hey i think weve got some things to work on. they played well and won. all positives. this time of year i hope you can find things to work on. that means room for improvements. everyone of thads teams at ohio state has improved as the season went imo. it has become an expectation to see solid growth. now keep in mind that learing comes small piece by piece, not in chunks. that is smoething to look forward to.

Turner, Diebs, BJ, Lighty, Madsen, Buford, Dallas, Simmons, Crater and Kechman with PJ playing in an emergency......that is 10-11.....

ok i see your math. doubt the true rotation is that deep. we have more who can contribute than weve had in awhile, agreed. all of those guys can hopefully contribute or steal minutes. (assumption on madsen and k-man)
