2025 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

As this thing evolves it seems clear that OSU is going to have to take a small-mid market approach to talent acquisition.

They aren’t going to be able to outspend others for the top talent so you better put some resources toward scouting and development.

There are few, if any, rules right now. Go build a feeder system from smaller schools. Pay them to steer late bloomers who are now OSU level, to OSU. Get creative with finding HS talent that isn’t at the camp circuit. Throw some brain power and money at a walk on program that will work in the new era

( I bet you could buy a lot of 3 star projects for 50k and stash them at a MAC school who can’t pay them anything)

Stuff like this is what a GM at Ohio State should be focused on. One guy builds the roster, another guy coaches it. They of course work together on talent and scheme being complementary.
This is the strategy I can see a lot of teams adopting. And it will sharply affect HSers who are lower than 4star and late season diamonds in the rough. I have a buddy who coaches MS football in NYC and he talks to his friends who coach at the HS, and he told me how difficult it is to get kids into bigger colleges now because most of those schools want more finished products from the Portal. The P4 are creating their own minor league system now. When you look at at Cignetti at IU that can be a model that is emulated by many. Lower rated HSers will start to get funneled to schools like JMU, Furman, Middle Tennessee St, etc and if they excel will have options of schools like Texas Tech, IU, Arizona St, but if they’re really good, the Tennessee’s, OSU’s, scUMs, Oklahomas will also be an option.
You can believe that if you want. Maybe I'm just cynical. Sure, not every single kid is a merc for hire, but if you think that many/most of these high profile recruits are going somewhere to play school, I think you're being naïve.
My fault if I misspoke. But I’m not naive enough to think that kids aren’t getting quite well to play football at Ohio State. My point was that OSU had the least Drama of any class, and the same can be said for last season as well. Day and staff have landed their recruits early and held on to 95+% of them until today to sign. That’s really remarkable if you think about it. There were virtually no surprises today. Offord wasnt even a rumor to flip for months, it was just a matter of where he’d land. Mathis had also been rumored to flip for months. There was some buzz about Sanders a week ago, but it was still a long shot to land him. Merritt was rumored to flip several weeks ago when Deion caught his ear. That was it, that was all the drama for a team who just lost to their biggest rival for the fourth time And isn’t in the conference champkinship. I’d say That’s a big freaking deal and shows that OSU paid well, but their recruits do seem to like the program better than others, hence why we saw so few decommits or flips or last minute shake downs

Indiana is adopting the small mid market approach.

OSU is still throwing major money towards recruits they value, and recruits who want to be at OSU. They don't pay players for the sake of paying them big money in order to get them to sign.

I feel like OSU would not pay somebody like Underwood just to get them to come, or like the U routinely does. That can't possibly be sustainable.

The scary team out there on the recruiting trail is now Oregon. They have the money, and they are really getting players to buy in. OSU runs similar to Oregon, but without the Phil Knight money.

Thing with a school like Oregon is, one man is essentially funding their NIL, but what happens if he gets impatient if they don't win an NC this year, or next... or next.... or next? Or when he passes, what then? Reminds me of when T Boone Pickens was funding OKst for years. He didn't have NIL, but he paid for every facility for the football just to be average to above average every year. And when he died, his family didn't love the program in the same way

I think you have to start sniffing out guys like Offord though and move on from them if it’s clear they are playing the highest bidder game. It was pretty obvious this was gonna happen but holding on till the last second prevented being able to get a body in his place.

Did it though? Seems like they were making offers about 2 months ago.

That sounds easy from our view, but just because a kid visits other schools doesn't mean he doesn't want to be a Buckeye. Its well known that kids are being paid to take visits. We can say we thought Offord was flipping for months, but we don't have the info that the coaches had, and it had been said constantly that he was in communication with the staff and they knew of his visits. Jeremiah Smith visited other campuses a bunch last year, Eddrick Houston made visits and never even did interviews, Alford did the same this year.

I think a wider net needs to be cast at certain positions(OL, DL). But I think the Portal can equalize some of those HS losses if you find the right guys. CB right now just needs depth, there's so much talent in that room that I don't think they'll miss Offord(Sanchez is better anyway), and Woods can be stashed for another year, as I could see a RS for him in 2025.

Forgot about good old T Boone, making Okie Light competitive, at least facility-wise. Somewhere, recollect that someone stated that leagues like the MAC, and others would develop the 'tweeners' or late bloomers, and if they showed promise, were scooped up by the bigger and better leagues/teams. Seems like that may be the consensus now. Talent is always going to draw the most teams interest, as well as the scarcity of the position itself (QB, OL, DL). And let us not forget who's the team that's offered. Using the Buckeyes as an example. If tOSU offers a kid, then other team takes note, as is well known that we have a very large 'evaluation' team, that have put in the homework already. I know others have the same sort of structure as well, but hey, I'm a Buckeye. Think it might have been pnuts, but if you go through the Oregon list of recruits (or their top recruits of all time), you see more than several that had Ohio State in their top tier, only to lose out in the end. Plus, haven't heard about many (any?) Oregon recruits flipping on signing day....kinda Alabamaesque, don't you think? Anyway, gotta play the hand we got, unless anyone can figure out how to hide a couple of aces up our sleeves. Go Bucks!

So because I am dumb it took me a bit to internalize this

But its brilliant

And you don't worry much about flash.

What you do is pay Beavis and Fredo to develop interior lineman and the occasional LB and TE for 2 years

There's an opportunity to replay the "every county in Nebraska sponsors a scholarship" model.

Now we're on to something

Exactamundo.

Straight out of the early 20th century baseball playbook and updated to the new issue.

Stash an army of projects at those places, subsidized by the parent team. The parent team gets the ones who turn into something, the rest don’t clutter up our roster.
