2023 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

The 5 stars announced:

1. LA QB Arch Manning (we offered, likely no chance he leaves the south)
2. CA QB Malachi Nelson (OU commit)
3. TX DE David Hicks (going to be a battle but with LJ Sr and hopefully a big year for our DEs, we are in the mix)
4. FL WR Brandon Inniss (looked promising early, but odds are he stays south)
5. IA OT Kadyn Proctor (we are a contender, but I will believe an Iowa OL doesn't end up a Hawkeye when I see it)
6. OH ATH Alex "Sonny" Styles (will be us or ND most likely, but I currently like our chances)
7. GA DE Lebbeus Overton (he's visited and seems enamored with LJ Sr, but will be a tough pull from the south)

Plenty of 2023 recruits heard their phone ring Wednesday.

Sept. 1 marked the first time Ohio State coaches could directly contact juniors in high school to have recruiting-related conversations, and the Buckeyes staff was pretty busy throughout the day.

Although many more recruits were surely contacted, Eleven Warriors was able to confirm the Buckeyes reached out to OSU targets AJ Harris, Sonny Styles, Kayin Lee, Samson Okunlola, Payton Kirkland, Clay Wedin, Keith Sampson Jr., TJ Shanahan and Sharif Denson.

Script, am a bit baffled about the 'how do you know this' aspect? Pretty certain that there's a pipeline somewhere to insiders, but cannot fathom calling all the kids on the Buckeye list to see if they got called by tOSU staff.....Can also believe that staff will utilize this free Friday to travel to, and do some inperson Face time at designated kids Friday night football games.

Never mind, in rereading this, it's a good question, but one that I/we are better off not knowing the answer to. Thanks anyway and Go Bucks! Leverage the home game against Oregon to plant the seeds of becoming one with the Buckeyes to all these recruits. Go Bucks!

We super need LB's and DB's. Any good news on the horizon.

The questions with the D will surely have a negative effect for this year. A change needs to happen, which I hate to say the collateral damage though bad, is worth the change for the future of the program.

You realize those aren't Script's original thoughts, right? He didn't say "just sayin"

Smith is the son of former Ohio State defensive end, the late Will Smith.

Smith Jr. is the first to admit he didn’t always realize the full extent of his father’s legacy.

“When I was younger, I think I was just like used to it and I never really understood how big a deal it was until I started getting older,” Smith Jr. said. “Then I really started realizing how big of a deal it was. I just think it’s awesome to be related to him.”

The Saints haven't forgotten the elder Smith's contributions to their organization, either.

Over the last five years, Smith Jr. and his family have kept in touch with New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, who coached his father for eight seasons. Payton has invited Smith Jr. and his family to various events since 2016, such as summer camps, games and even Ohio State’s pro day in 2018.

“I just remember looking at the guys running the 40-yard dashes and thinking, ‘These dudes are unbelievably fast,’” Smith Jr. said of attending the pro day with Payton in 2018.

Earlier this fall, Smith Jr. received a text from Payton. “We need to get you to a game this year,” the text read. Smith Jr. later attended the Saints’ game against the New England Patriots, the team his father played his final pro season for in 2014, on Sep. 26 in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Payton checks in on his former players’ family every couple of months or so, Smith Jr. said.
