2022 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Big things could be happening for Ohio State 2022 recruiting class and those things are being discussed in major part because of the effort being made by the current crop of Buckeyes commitments. The only thing more persistent than the NCAA recruiting dead period over the last few months has been C.J. Hicks, Dasan McCullough, and Bennett Christian recruiting on behalf of Ohio State.

“It’s huge, and I think that because of 2020, there’s the Zooms and the FaceTimes, Microsoft Teams, Skype, there’s just so many ways to communicate now that that’s really been big, more than ever before,” Ryan Day said last week. “Group type of stuff that’s gone on has been really strong, and that’s why when you recruit guys in your class, you wanna bring in leaders, guys of high character so that they bring those types of guys in there because they spend more time with the recruits than we do. I think that’s really, really important.

C.J. Hicks (right) has been recruiting Shawn Murphy and every other big-time recruit around the country.

The work is on the verge of paying off in a big way.

The Buckeyes are trending for the country’s top-ranked quarterback and more than a few other top 2022 prospects and with Hicks, McCullough and Bennett as the ringleaders, are causing a major stir on the internet.

BUCKEYE BASH 2.0 COMING TOGETHER?
Ohio State’s 2021 class took center stage two weeks ago with the Buckeye Bash, and the 2022 class stole the spotlight the ensuing week with some potentially massive commitments coming within the next month – or perhaps the next two weeks.

Another item transpiring among the 2022 Buckeye commits and targets is their own version of what Jack Sawyer and Co. put together, as C.J. Hicks told us on Friday that they are working on putting together a Buckeye Bash 2.0 (that’s not what Hicks called it, but that’s what we’re calling it) for the 2022 cycle, with their eyes set on January as a target month to get guys to Columbus.

Keep your eyes peeled for that as we probably are not done with commit-led recruiting weekends from Ohio State’s class.

GOODWIN LOVES BUCKEYES' CULTURE
We are going to have plenty more on the recruitment of potential five-star offensive tackle Kiyaunta Goodwin this week and in the coming weeks and months, as the 6-foot-8, 305-pounder is going to eventually find himself ranked in the top 50 if he continues to hone his craft, and he is one of Ohio State's top targets (perhaps the top target?) in the 2022 cycle.

Goodwin is one of the players who Hicks and Co. will certainly attempt to get to any sort of Buckeye Bash 2.0. When I visited with Goodwin two weeks ago, he showed me an Instagram message from Hicks who – as is his personal brand as Ohio State's top peer recruiter in the 2022 class – had already reached out to Goodwin to start communication with him as the Buckeyes look to land him.

“He’s doing his job,” Goodwin said with a smile. “He's doing what he's gotta do.”

So are the Buckeyes. Goodwin loved talking about Greg Studrawa and his relationship with the Ohio State offensive line coach, saying that they're playing the line of communication with him perfectly: “hard enough to the point where it’s not overwhelming. They got it perfect, right on the line.”

Ohio State's program as a whole continues to be the main selling point, though, for Goodwin.

“πThey’re a good program,” Goodwin said. “The culture, it definitely seems like a place I would wanna end up at one day. It’s a great city, the atmosphere is great, and the coaches are wonderful. They’re some of the best coaches. They’re hard workers, and this could end up being the year they win a national championship.”

The internet is a wonderful place, but if we’re being honest, it’s cultivated the instant gratification culture that sometimes makes recruiting a difficult thing to follow. There’s plenty of really good work being done behind the scenes by Hicks and others, but that doesn’t mean all of their tweets and buzz-building is rooted in hard evidence.

A lot of the confidence and expectations being expressed are momentum-based predictions because of solidly built relationships and the things being said in private conversations.

The simple truth is that the kids putting in extensive time on the recruiting trail are excited by those talks, and that has led to the belief that a lot of good things are coming for the Buckeyes in the Class of 2022. It doesn’t mean, necessarily, that it’s going to happen overnight. Call it a slow burn.

That will not make the instant gratification crowd happy, but it should because the odds of retaining the highest-profile recruits go up — especially in a class that will not do almost anything on the visit front until next spring — if the relationships are longer built and more solidly rooted. That may mean some delays in potential commitments now, but it should end up being a positive for Ohio State down the road. It should mean more of a trickle-effect — that could start tomorrow with tight end Benji Gosnell’s expected announcement — as opposed to the deluge being predicted on social media.

He sure seems like a lot of work to move from New Orleans, LA in the heart of SEC country to Cincinnati, OH and the land of B1G football. And to also play under a protégé of Kerry Coombs at Lakota West. It may just be 17yos having fun online. If you watched the Birmingham interview with Christian, McCullough, Hicks and Powers, they all love the recruiting twitter game with fans and analysts. And know exactly what their doing when they send out obscure tweets. They know they can move the needle with a few well placed and obscure tweets

That's horrible. If I were 17 and had the power to mess with the heads of gullible adults I never would have done so.

You could be right and it ends up being nothing, but the tea leaves sure don’t read well. His Twitter went from being all Ohio State, to nothing. No mention of them. No liking anything Ohio State related. Nothing.

Take away the pinned commitment, and you’d have no clue he was even interested in Ohio State...let alone committed to them. Tegra is quiet as well, but his likes are filled with Ohio State stuff.
