2021 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Absolutely, Saguaro has produced plenty of prospects that I wish would have ended up in Columbus. Seems like AZ in general is producing more talent lately, so getting Miller last cycle and Burke in 2021 is a nice inroad. As to debates on Davis Jr or Davies, I think both are in if they want in. Not sure how those numbers work out after the unexpected commits from Dunn and Burke though...might be a decommit if that happens, as I don't think the numbers at the Inn add up in that scenario...8 DB's would be excessive unless the staff sees some of them at other positions (i.e., Jaylen Johnson at LB or Dunn at WR).

Just a meaningless hunch but I think if both Davies and Davis were to pull the trigger I think Turrentine bounces. I have no presentable basis for that claim, but his has always seemed to be the most abrupt and short-sighted commitment to me.

Could work out that way. Read rumors that Coombs is unhappy with some of the underclassmen and wants "his guys". As RB posted above it may be that he takes both Davies at corner and Davis Jr.at safety with Johnson going to LB where alot of people have predicted him to be.

I not sure that it's about being unhappy with the guys in the room as there are not enough guys in the room. Like OL last year, they need numbers. 2019 and 2020 had small DB numbers. If either Brown or Banks get injured or explode and leave after next season, there are not many CB's behind them.

A brief update on DB recruiting.....

The Buckeyes already have six DB commitments for the Class of 2021:

S Andre Turrentine (re-classified from CB)
S Jantzen Dunn (re-classified from ATH)
S Jaylen Johnson (possible move to LB)
CB Jakailin Johnson
CB Devonta Smith
ATH Denzel Burke (possible move to CB)

The Buckeyes are still strongly pursuing three DB targets:

S Derrick Davis Jr. (2 CBs to PSU; 1 cloudy [Wiltfong])
CB Jaylin Davies (6 CBs to Oregon; 1 cloudy)
CB Tony Grimes (3 CBs to UGa; 3 CBs to UNC; 1 CB to TAMU)

At this point, it looks like the Buckeyes are out for Jaylin Davies (commitment date June 19th), and probably out for Tony Grimes (commitment date December 1st). The good news with Grimes is this: No one seems to lead and the experts can't agree. The bad news: Ohio State is not (yet) being mentioned as a leader, or even a serious candidate, by anyone.

I think that the Buckeyes still have a good shot for Derrick Davis, Jr., with Penn State leading and Clemson hanging around.

CB Jordan Hancock remains a possible (unlikely) flip candidate. Let's see if there is any real fallout from the latest Dabo Swinney controversy.

If none of the four prospects mentioned above commits to Ohio State (very possible), then the Buckeyes will be looking for a "late bloomer" "under the radar" guy for the final DB spot. And the good news is this: With all the COVID-19 shutdowns, there have basically been no camps, combines, or visits for three months, so the chances of finding a "late bloomer" "under the radar" guy are going to be pretty good. Mark Pantoni and staff will be looking at lots of senior tape this year.

Plus, the staff doesn’t really have much interest in position classification right now anyway right? Turrentine looks like a guy that can play slot corner if the staff wants to develop him as such; Burke looks like he absolutely has the fluidity and athleticism to be an outside corner here at the expense of the staff developing him there too.

I would love to land Davis Jr; guy looks like he could he would Jabrill Peppers would falsely perceived to be.
